How to stop breaking router bits

A customer asked me how to avoid breaking tiny router bits. I answer this question from time to time on the phone, and it makes a good Trade Secrets topic. I talked to Dan Erlewine and Dan made us this video. Check it out!

To use our 1/8"-shank bits in your laminate trimmer's 1/4" collet, see our #5246 Adapter Collet.

Length 1-1/2" (38.10mm)
Shank diameter 1/8" (3.18mm)

Use the larger bits for removing wood in the middle of your inlay work, and save the fine bits for the fine details. The fine detail bits are fragile, for routing intricate details only.

I bought a 3/32" bit and love it. I originally got it for inlay work on large cavities but after using it I have found it very useful for all cutting needs. My favorite use has been rosette cuts using the StewMac "Dremel" base and circle jig.

Good bits. The small ones are delicate and can break but they are pretty tough. In a compact router they cut like mad. They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for.

These router bits deliver a very crisp edge, and a very smooth bottom. Used with the stewmac router base, careful work will produce great results. The only down side is that the 1/32 inch size is very fragile, if you need that size it's a good idea to get more than one.
