ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler

About This Item

Our first choice for filling the pores of open-grain woods. Compatible with all stains and finishes.

The first step to a flawless professional finish!
ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler is our first choice for filling and leveling the pores of open-grain woods, such as rosewood, ash, koa and mahogany, before spraying a finish. No shrinking or cracking; it dries faster than other types of fillers, and sands easily. Supplied in 4-ounce jars, ready to mix with water.

"It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole-filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. The colors are natural and realistic."
—Dan Erlewine

  • Waterbase, non-toxic, solvent-free and nonflammable
  • Compatible with all finishes, including nitrocellulose and waterbase lacquers
  • Compatible with most stains, waterbase pigments, sealers and topcoats
  • Traditional guitar colors
  • Neutral is a light base filler for custom tinting
  • Easy to apply, dries fast and sands easily
  • Fills wood pores without sinking, shrinking or cracking
ColorTone Grain Filler is supplied in paste form, ready to mix with water (10-15 percent water works well for us) and brush on the wood. Let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish. No shelf-life problems: if the filler dries hard in your cup, simply add more water.

4-ounce (118ml) container.

Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, koa and ash have porous "open-grained" surfaces. Filling and leveling the pores leaves the surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the grain as well.

Better instructions might help

This product was highly recommended to me. But alas, it went poorly. I did my best to follow the instructions. But can someone tell me how to add 10 ~15% water to hard crumbs of clay??? Perhaps if there was a description of what it's starting texture is supposed to be, I would have had a starting point. I decided to live with the swamp ash grain texture and go with a lighter 'natural' finish. It was all I could think of, other than scrub the body clean and start over.

Works but not better than wood putty

By

Verified Buyer

I usually use joint compound or wood putty to fill grain, but I thought I'd give this a shot. It's fine, but not better. The only complaint I have is the directions: it says to add "10 - 15% water." I'd prefer a more specific direction, like 2 oz. water for every 5 oz of filler or whatever.

Aside from the extra step of sanding it off I had no problems with it. I like the old stuff I have always used too.

Lumpy 'N  Bumpy 'N  Dry.....Oh My !

By

Verified Buyer

Adding the suggested "10-15% warm water" to your Waterbase Grain Filler yielded a lumpy-dry substance that could not adhere to the properly prepared Mahogany wood. I just increased the amount of warm water to about 20% and it worked perfectly. ...just sayin'.

Well, that's all I've got.

ThankYouTooMuch !

Amazing!

I've used other products in the past but this stuff is amazing. I used the Ebony to pore fill the rosewood sides and back on a new build to highlight the grain with beautiful results. Sands incredibly easy and filled in one coat.
