StewMac Guitar Buffer Complete Outfit

About This Item

The only buffing system designed for instrument finishing.
Our exclusive professional buffing outfit features a slow 715-rpm buff speed, ideal for delicate instrument finishes.

  • More room to polish large guitars: 36"-long arbor shaft and a small housing for increased clearance.
  • Larger buffing surface: big 14" buffs, selected especially for instrument finishing.
  • The right speed: slow 715-rpm buff speed is ideal for delicate instrument finishes. Driven by a powerful 3/4-horse motor.
StewMac Guitar Buffer: a compact powerhouse!
Features that match the industrial buffers at major guitar factories:
  • Smooth running and quiet. Pillow block bearings on a half-inch-thick aluminum baseplate anchor the shaft for minimal vibration.
  • 3/4-horse motor. Power for the large surface contact required to buff guitars.

"This is a factory buffer scaled for a small shop. Other buffers don't give you enough room to move the instrument, and they run too fast—burning off the finish you're trying to polish. StewMac's guitar builders and tool designers talked about what we wanted in a buffer, and what we want to avoid. No other company has designed a buffing arbor system so specifically for luthiers' needs."
—Jay Hostetler, StewMac Product Development

Beware the coarse compound

By
(Customer's Reviews)

These are excellent polishing compounds. However, the dark/coarse bar is very aggressive and if one buffs through to a light colored wood (think spruce) a dark brown stain will result which at least in my case, required stripping and re-sanding the top. I continue to use all the grades but a deep sense of respect......

My go-to methid for a professional finish

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I have been using a stew mac buffing system for many years and it is the only system I have found to give my guitars a professional finish. The polishing compounds are excellent and really last. If you have not used this buffing system you will be truly amazed. Just make sure you start with the finish properly prepared with gradations of sand paper and use the buffing compounds as suggested. The system also works great for my repair working in removing scratches and touch ups where I have had to use lacquer.

Buffer review

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The buffer base and motor holes did not line up and the buffer base and Erlehwile shop stand did not align either. Something was changed in a jig making this or the base. It looks tremendous but as I had to re-drill, re-size, and use larger washers- that is a clear disappointment in something brand new and exciting to buy. Also, the motor burned out the first time I used it. Kudos to StewMac customer service for shipping a new motor right away! For what this costed I expected much higher quality control, StewMac. Again, thanks for standing so clearly behind the motor replacement.

Good Buffer..but

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The instructions are inadequate..I think I received 2 different types of buffing wheels, but since they were not labeled I was left to guess. There are just too many gaps in the "instructions" to make the assembly easy. Also, The buffer base is probably a bargain if you don't need a different set-up. Expect to spend about 4 hours making one.

FANTASTIC !

The buffer and shop stand are well made .I highly recommend them . My buffer is mobile . I made a base for it out of two 3/4 inch thick plywood 2ft. by 2ft. glued together and mounted four 2 inch swivel casters to the bottom, two of them are the locking type . The whole machine is very stable I did use four 3 1/2 hex head bolts by 1/2 dia . to secure the shop stand and coated the base for the buffer and stand with matt water based polyurethane for easy clean up.

Great buffer.

This is a great buffer

But...as I'm a numb nut when it comes to machinery i set it up and it had very little power- when i tried to rake the wheels it would stop. After taking the red front sheil off, I realised that the problem was (look at my attached pic) that ALL the allen key nut thingys were NOT locked, but totally lose so everything was slipping but still appearing to be functioning well. Like i said, im a machinery numb nut and perhaps this is common place thing to check but after this all is now perfect :)
I used a ruler indexing off the larger front pulley to align perfectly the smaller motor pulley so all was in line and true.
Great buffer, expensive, but so are my instruments!

very nice!

Works as advertised! Very messy! Wear a dust mask and goggles and apron! I didn't, but now I would highly recommend them. Follow Dan's Video Demo and that will get you started for sure. I just wish the 'complete' kit for the price, included the base plate and hardware (that's the 4 Star rating), but everything was very good quality in materials. It does make em shiny! But it also shows everything under the clear coat finish that much more magnified... so finish and fill your sound wood well! Also, don't tighten the belt too tight or it won't spin at the proper speed. Think rubber band tight... not alternator belt tight! Build On!

Great Product, No Instructions

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I've never used a buffer before. There were instructions on assembling the machine, but absolutely nothing on actually how to use the buffer: how much compound, how to apply the compound, how much pressure to use, how long to buff, the best method for buffing the surface. There was a sales video that alluded to some of this, but it wasn't complete - more of a sales pitch. A quick step by step video would be nice, or at least some instruction so I don't ruin the buffer or my guitar.
