Bow Rehairing - Great Learning Tool

If you want to learn about the craft of rehairing a bow - this DVD is a great tool. The tools to learn this craft are available, but few. The best option is obviously hands on training from a school or from a luthier. However, to many, the opportunity of attending a school or a week long class is just not an option. The ability to bring the teacher to you, via DVD, is great. Roger's video provides a very clear understanding of violin bow rehairing. He goes, step by step, thru the rehairing process. There are some great visual aids (i.e. bow parts cut so you can see an internal view of how the wedges and hair should sit properly in the frog and bow tip mortise). He gives some "tips of the trade" that will prove very helpful. He also goes through the list of tools required to properly complete a rehair. There is quite a bit of time spent on the propper carving of wedges. This was very helpful. However, I think there was too much time spent actually watching him do the carving. It's not horrible. I just think that part could have been slimmed down a little. I'm a "visual" learner. So watching this process is easier for me than reading about it. I actually learned to rehair bows many years ago from a local luthier. That being said, I haven't done it in a long time and I wanted to see how someone else went through the process. I am very confident someone with basic knowledge, decent skills with the tools required, and patience, can learn to rehair a bow from this video. Will it be perfect? Should you try to rehair a $10,000 bow as your first (or 100th) bow. Probably not. But for the player that wants to rehair his own bows, or the person that wants to learn the basics to start building their knowledge for this craft....this is a great learning/instructional tool.
