Larry Robinson, custom inlay artist has produced three fantastic videos on the art and methods of pearl inlay. They're broken up into three catagories of basic, intermediate, and advanced inlay techniques.

Basic Inlay Techiques:
Tool demonstrations, plus sawing, routing, gluing and finishing a simple butterfly inlay, using various types of shell material. Expert instruction for the beginner. 2-1/2 hours.

Intermediate Inlay Techniques:
The design, cutting, routing, gluing and engraving of a fancy shell vine in a guitar fingerboard. 2-1/2 hours.

Advanced Inlay Techniques:
Inlaying signatures and block lettering, "pinstriping" a neck, and inlaying the compound curves of an archtop guitar. 2 hours.

Will these videos play on your equipment?
DVD: These DVDs are not "region-specific," and are intended for worldwide use.

It's easy to look at a well executed inlay and wonder how to go about it. Larry explains a lot with these DVD's. Given the chance, there are a few more questions I would ask but well worth the investment if you want to learn Inlay!

Good Stuff

A great intro if you've always wanted to do some inlay work. A lot of great techniques and this type of work is simpler that it seems at first. If you want to take a stab at it, get this video and have at it.

excellent instruction

I own one of the earlier versions of the three-part series on vhs, and I've practically worn them out, watching them over and over. I have since made many projects with lots of inlay. I truly love this art form and I have Larry to thank for it. I've conversed with Larry on many occasions via e-mail with questions or comments, and he always responds, he's a really nice guy. I highly recommend this video series for any one interested in inlay.I'm including a shot of one of the first projects I completed after viewing the series. It's not of a stringed instrument, but I think you'll appreciate the inlays anyway. I also used stewmacs down-cut spiral bits and cyano adhesives on this one.

Looking over the shoulder of a master

This 3-DVD set is wonderful, like being at Robinson's bench and looking over his shoulder as he executes simple and elaborate inlays. The information is presented clearly, with Robinson providing valuable commentary that extends beyond mere "how-to" instructions. His dry humor is also included. Using the info from these DVD's, I was able to execute a script logo inlay into my peghead that belies the fact that this was my first advanced inlay. Many thanks, Larry!
