Some good stuff, but...

We are all (hopefully) on the quest for consistently great tone. Any useful information toward this end is desirable and potentially valuable. This DVD contains some important and helpful tips, and is a good place to start. The section on really listening for, and learning to define, your tone is worth the price of the video. Where this DVD (and most other voicing techniques) comes up short is in addressing the absolute necessity of grading top wood for it's tonal potential before deciding to build with it. Mass per square inch is a vital piece of data that separates average top wood from great top wood. All the thicknessing, flexing, tapping, and brace-carving in the world can't make an average top into a great top. But there is a lot of good discussion and ideas in this DVD that will add to a builder's understanding of guitar tone.

Take your building to the next level

A very well thought out and presented DVD on voicing. Kent does a great job of making a complicated subject understandable and the results repeatable. Has really helped my building and taking my craft to the next level!

Good but not Great

If you are new to tap tuning then this is a good place to start. However, I was really disappointed that he did not even round over the tops of his braces. In my opinion that leaves a lot of extra mass (weight) on the soundboard that does not need to be there. As we all know, mass or weight kills tone. These dvd's will give you a solid starting point for tap tuning.

A must have

I am one of the lucky ones in as much as I have built enough guitars to have gotten to point where I am happy with the tone I have managed to achieve but here is a definite work that clarifies every thing you need to know to start achieving good results. A must have for any budding acoustic maker and thanks Kent for making sense of everything.

Into the unknown!

I really enjoy Kents approach to this DVD and the way it has been planned.
The information that he gives to you is fantastic and said in a way that it is easy to understand.
As a budding Luthier I was fascinated by this DVD and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in this important stage of guitar building.

To good - To long

A good review on guitar acoustic principles. Useful to the professional guitar maker, exploring those details that makes difference between regular and great guitars. Maybe the format (lecture) is not the best for a class on DVD, turning some topics a little long.

Illuminating

This dvd defines a very dark area in the soundboard voicing & construction and improves on it. Highly recommended.

Get This FIRST if your serious!

I've been watching a lot of videos from Stewmac and most of them are very good, but 5 stars doesn't get it. This video set deserves '25' stars. I usually wait until the honeymoon's over before writing a review, but I'm writing this before I've even finished viewing it all. I have already gotten my money's worth and have seen enough to understand the products value. It's described as an advanced video, but I say if you are serious, you should definitely buy this video before you buy ANYTHING else. Great teacher giving vital information.
