Tired of fighting cantankerous old tuners but don't want to give up the vintage look? We have completely redesigned our Golden Age mandolin tuners! Under the direction of StewMac's Don MacRostie, renowned mandolin maker, we've brought back classic features of tuning machines from the pre-World War II era.

"Over the years we've tried every mandolin tuner under the sun. Of all the options, the Golden Age tuners have been the obvious choice for our mandolins." —Alex Rueb, Collings Guitars

F-style models also available.

The look of the old, the reliability of the new.
The look is more authentic than ever, but close-tolerance specifications, nylon worm bearings, and 15:1 gear ratio make Golden Age tuners smoother and more efficient than vintage machines ever were. Two optional relic finishes duplicate that "well-played" patina that makes most other modern tuners look johnny-come-lately on a vintage or reproduction instrument. The distinctive Loar-shape steel baseplates even have the same footprint and engraving as 1920s originals.

The details are 1920s too:
Old-style string post shape
Square worm supports
Straight-slot worm gear screws
Roundhead straight-slot mounting screws
Vintage-shape black or ivoroid knobs

Each set includes 4-left / 4-right tuners with mounting screws and press-fit peghead bushings.

Gear ratio15:1
String post diameter0.236" (6mm)
String post spacing29/32" standard (23mm)
Required peghole diameter.336" (8.53mm)

Tip: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

To be sure these tuners fit your instrument, compare your existing machines and peghole dimensions to our listed specs to help determine the best replacement.

Excellent tuners

Replaced original tuners on Breedlove Quartz OO mandolin. Shafts were the same on new tuners as original. Only had to drill one hole while others were covered by plates. Love the new black buttons and the new tuners stay in tune much better than the cheapie originals. Super fast service from Stewmac and was able to communicate with a human with my questions.

Look good and work well

Replaced original tuners on an old Strad-O-Lin. I chose the least expensive bright nickel w/ black knobs. The black knobs have a nice vintage vibe and looked just right, and the tuners work well. The shaft spacing was just right. The quality level is about what you'd expect at this price. Too bad the ivoroid knob versions are so expensive.

Tuning problems on an antique mandolin

This beautiful old mandolin was always difficult to tune due to the wear on the old machine heads. I didn't want the usual shiny chrome finish as it would spoil the original look of the instrument. The peg spacing was slightly different so I made a drilling jig (only later realising that StewMac offer one - part ref# 5007) and the Golden Age A-Style tuners went on a treat. The relic brass with black knobs gave the perfect antique look I was looking for and the instrument is now a delight to tune.

Golden Era A Tuners

I thought I was losing my mind in that I buy these tuners for all my mandos and especially liked the improvements made during the recent times. However I usually buy the F style and love the detail as to removable knobs etc. In general they hold tune very well and are an attractive price point too. My recent pruchase was for A style and I was disapointed that the above mentioned detail was left off. One would think they would like to make money off folks who like custom knobs or simply want to change what came with the instrument. Alas this will not be the case.

Lastly I have had a couple of quality problems but Stew Mac makes it easy to exchange. So all in all good tuners which could be made a bit better in terms of detailing.

Disappointing

I tried a set of bright nickel with black knobs Golden Age mandolin tuners as a cheaper alternative to Schaller ones, that I usually use. I didn't get very enthusiastic about the Golden Age tuners. I think the design and quality gap is greater than what the price difference would suggest. I will stick to Schaller tuners.

Golden Age tuners

Used the tuners on a '56 Gibson A-50. Looks great, work better than the originals. Keep the strings in tune.

finally ! vintage finish mandolin tuners

these tuners look and work super / they compliment the old time finish and feel of my hand made mandolins / i sold my stock of shiny gold and nickel tuners on ebay to get more of these.now how about some matching tailpieces & strap pins?

great A model replacements

Great working replacement for a 1926 A model, removed the existing originals for next owner, I didn't want the old ivoroid buttons breaking during my ownership. Like others I opted to use the original bushings vs. modifying the mando to accept larger new ones.

Very Nice

I replaced the worn out original tuners with these on my 1925 Gibson Ajr and they look great. They are very high quality looking and turn smooth although they are a bit tight to turn. Also, the bushings that come with the tuners are larger than the originals and wont fit in the original holes without reaming out the holes (see pic). Instead, I used the original bushings which worked fine.
