Pre-war style tuners reborn!
Exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, our replica 3-on-plate tuners featuring square worm supports on rectangular steel plates. Their improved 15:1 gear ratio provides better tuning than the originals, and our popular relic nickel finish complements vintage hardware.

Short string post also available: Original-style short string posts made especially for tapered-thickness solid pegheads, such as pre-war GibsonĀ® L-0, L-00, J-45, J-35 and Nick Lucas guitars.

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. They add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • Original-shape knobs; relic nickel tuners have knobs with a matte finish
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Press-fit peghead bushings
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws included)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing

Also available to fit slotted pegheads.

TIP: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct spacing for accurate tuning.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right." —John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional." —Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

To be sure these tuners fit your instrument, compare your existing machines and peghole dimensions to our listed specs to help determine the best replacement.

Thanks for making these available with short posts

They are a great match for the vintage style instruments I am building, at a fair price for the quality. I haven't put strings in them yet, but I don't expect any issues.

Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Solid Peghead plus black buttons.

This is my second pair of Golden Age tuners I have bought. Aesthetically, they look great and even match the screw holes for my 1930's Gibson Kalamazoo. I also ordered the black tuner buttons in order to swap over the white ones as on the short post type they only offer with white. Mechanically a couple of the winders were quite stiff but when I added a bit of lube to the worm and cog that improved their working greatly. It's a shame they don't offer the same product only a slightly better mechanism. But for the price and look if you haven't got a lot of money to spend they are probably the best on the market. Getting the white buttons off by heating the shaft with a soldering iron was easy but getting the black ones on was a bit more tricky. In the end I used a small drill to widen out the slot on the inside of the button and filed a slight taper on the arm to assist it entering the button slot. After these small modifications and heating up the arm again they slid on quite easily. When I tried to get the first button on without doing this but just heating arm, the button started to bulge and wouldn't have looked nice if I continued. The buttons are advertised as fitting the Golden age tuners but from my experience think the slots should be made a tad wider.

Beware the backlash

I've probably put 15 or 20 sets of these on the Gibson L-0, L-1 and Nick Lucas replicas I build. If you're after an authentic look, they can't be beat. The quality, however, leaves much to be desired. I've yet to install a set that didn't have anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 turn of backlash on at least one of the posts. I continue to offer them to customers for whom an authentic look is more important than playability, but if you want a tuner that works properly at a decent price you're much better off with something like a Grover StaTite.

Excellent product to capture that old time look

I put these tuners on a 1930's Gibson copy i made for personal use. I found the tuners to be good quality with no/hardly any 'give' and no slip. With a look and feel of something from decades past, I like them (I have also used the engraved plate version for slotted headstock with the same results [but at double the price...])~Beau Hannam Guitars~

1920's tuners for solid peghead

Tuner shafts fit nice, screw holes not spaced exactly like the original vintage tuners, but not a problem to adapt. Tuners are smoother and better geared than the originals, but look like the old ones, have an aged look. Tuner gears mesh well with just a little slack in one, but minimal and not an issue. Great price to make my 1933 L-00 look original and function well.

Great tuners

This is the second set of these that I have put on guitars. None of my customers can even tell the difference between the originals!

Couldn't be better

Absolutely authentic, except they're made better than the originals. I use these as my standard tuner on the Gibson L-0 and L-1 copies that I make and I rarely get a request to substitute anything else. I've used 15 or 20 sets and never had a problem.
