Instructions
Designed especially for stringed instrument work.
  • Excellent control
  • Easy installation
  • Accurate freehand routing

Sturdy, compact, and adjustable
Each turn of the large knurled thumbwheels adjusts your Dremel's cutting depth by .035" (.889mm). You can rout an inlay cavity that's precisely compensated for the thickness of the pearl and glue, for less sanding later.

Tall twin handles give you excellent control for freehand routing, and you get a good view of your work. There's even a built-in nozzle for attaching a mini air pump to continuously blow away the dust—you'll rout inlay cavities more precisely, for a better fit requiring less filler.

Complete set includes:

Precision Router Base
For sturdy, accurate freehand routing
Binding Edge Guide
To cut smooth, clean binding channels up to 3/8" thick
Router Bit for Binding
Small diameter is ideal for tight curves
Mini Air Pump
Keeps the cutting area free of dust

And here's a tip from Dan Erlewine: clamp the Dremel and router base upside-down on your workbench, and use the bottom of the router base as a mini drum sander, as Dan Erlewine did for a Gibson L-1 archtop bridge in this issue of our Trade Secrets Newsletter.

Installation is easy.
Simply unscrew the threaded plastic collar on the nose of the Dremel, and screw on the Precision Router Base. Its 3/4-12 thread fits:
Dremel 4000, 400XPR, Professional, MultiPro and most corded models made since 1986
Black & Decker Wizard and RTX
Our Foredom custom handpiece

Make your Dremel a more versatile guitar shop tool.

Does what it's named for..... Precision

This base does exactly what is's made for precision, the mini pump blows away the dust.

The edge guide is good but you do need a little practice for good result but if you do want to have a perfect result, I suggest to use a router with binding bits and bearing.

The only less positive point is that you have to check if the knob on precision base are tight enough, you don't want them to loose and ruin your binding

Neat & Necessary

This tool is a must for building mandolins. Be careful not to drop it on the floor as it will break if it hits on the plate

Steady and Capable

Very easy to use and has great control in doing detailed cuts for inlay or to use when routing binding channels.

Brilliant!

The precision router base combined with the Stewmac down cut bits made the routing of the headstock inlay on "number 1" a joy. Really easy to accurately adjust depth of cut and guiding the free hand route was simple and precise. Will now also order the soundhole/rosette routing jig and binding jig as the Dremel equivalents just don't stack up.

I now have 3 of these.

Excellent design....and very well made. I use them for Inlay and the binding rout. And, they are priced fairly in my opinion. Now I just wish they would work with the Proxxon motor unit, and a Sioux pencil die grinder. Maybe an adapter kit.

Precision

Great tool to add to my arsenal! Well engineered and made tool. Trimmed back the binding and popped the top off an old Gibson in nothing flat. Looking forward to working with this tool.

great but..........

this tool is fantastic it does the job great but it doesn't fit between the neck pocket and lower horn of certain types of guitars due to the size of edge guide....still a recommended buy!!!!

My, that's a fine tool you have there!

I purchased the Precision router base along with the Foredom handpiece recently and I have to say it's made inlay work and any small scale routing operations like cleaning up nut beds or fret slots or whatever so much easier and more consistent.

Every other Dremel type base I've used before vibrates and it's really difficult to be as precise as we need to be. This tool in conjunction with the Foredom hand piece has made a real difference in the quality of work I'm able to do and that's what it's all about, yes?

Verry usefull and precise

Hi,

I'm verry pleased with this router base. Used it to rout the cut-outs into kerfings to fit the bracing. Went just perfect. Hope to get it to do the same job for some inlays.

only remark: to bad there's no air-pump available for european 220v. I'll use my vacuum cleaner instead....still looking for the reverse gear shift on that one :-)

Oh and congratulations on the DHL shippement....(ordered on wednesday, received in Belgium at my doorstep on friday seems almost an impossible thing to do, but that's how they do it)

thanks,

Stephan

Router Base w/ binding attachment.

I've been building guitars and mandolins for just shy of 15 years, and for some reason I just haven't purchased the Stew-Mac router base until recently. I would like to tell all you luthiers in computer-land reading this review: YOU MUST BUY THIS ROUTER BASE! The factory Dremel base is poorly designed and built, whereas the Stewart MacDonald base is quite exceptional.
I find myself using the Dremel every day now, where I used to only use it once every couple weeks. This is a good tool, a must have for professionals and amateurs alike! Buy it now, it's not worth waiting for! Just remember to tighten up the allen screws every once in a while. It's fantastic.
