Gauged Nut Slotting Files

Read 147 Reviews   |   Write a Review

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing. Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

TIP: A nut file can be rocked back and forth while cutting, to form a slightly wider slot when necessary.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Extremely reliable and accurate

Gauged the nut slotting files from a vendor different from the old, which was more rigid. But this seems more sturdy than the previous .. not bad.

These are essential!

They are expensive, but worth it! Work great and last forever. I used these most recently for my Tele-assembly project. Can't do this stuff without my Stew-Mac tools and parts.

Worth the Money

Have used them to make 3 nuts. They are high priced, but are worth the extra $. One word of advice; GO SLOW and check depth OFTEN, they cut so fast.

perfect

Those work like a charm. The only reason I gave them 4 star is because I use the XL nickel regular-light strings, which is pretty much a standard, and the size of some files is 0.001" smaller than some of the strings. It's no big deal but it would've been nice to get a perfect fit.

Basic tool

I use these files every day and they do the job they are meant to do. Not fancy but they work fine.

Great Saw!!

Cuts at the perfect speed so you dont cut to much. I ordered the lowest gauge as a start for my slots. This one was a little too thin for me but would work perfect for a 10 gauge string. All in all they do what they say :)

Right tool for the job!

I have a full compliment of stew mac nut files. Both these style and the double sided files. I really like the handle on the double sided file. Makes things easier. However, these work just fine. I cringe whenever I see people trying filed feeler gauges and torchtip cleaners instead of real nut files.
