Essential for fretting
The #4491 Double-edge Fret File is one of seven tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Kit, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. Kit also includes our book, Fretwork Step By Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

OTHER TOOLS NEEDED FOR BEST RESULTS

To get the best results from this product, get the fret dressing stick with the 600 grit, and get some flexible polishing papers, grits from 2000-4000. After that, apply some X-Treem metal polish. This will probably all cost under 60-70 bucks and will get you to a professional shine. I also have another secret process I add but I keep that a secret in my shop. ;)

Happy Customer

This was the first time to try to level and crown frets, and it turned out great. I will continue to do more of my own guitar work.

Pretty good tool. Good value.

I have done a few recrownings but for my first full refret job I decided to give these files a shot. They definitely got the job done. As another reviewer stated, they are not very aggressive. I ended up using a three corner file to start the crowning on each fret and applied the final touches with the double edge fret file. I couldn't be happier with the result. Absolutely the right tool for the job and for the price a good value as well.

Crowning Files

These files do a very good job of shaping the frets. Not very aggressive, so you will have to work the frets pretty good. Better in the long run, avoids additional dressing after the fact.

not bad

i think the cheaper one does a better job, seams to be less work on the finishing side of things, these seam to leave me more work, But this is just my opinion

Great files!

I'm a musician/repair tinkerer not a luthier, these files are very easy to use even for a newb. They helped me breathe new life into several cherished older instruments and will definitely become a permanent part of my repair kit.

Have Surpassed My Expectations

I have used these files now for several months to recrown multiple (100+) Stainless Steele and Gold frets without issue. I had reservations about the durability of these files but have actually found them to be very acceptable. I'm satisfied with the price also.

Gets the job done

I didn't want to spend the cash for the diamond files since I usually only work on my own instruments. These files are well made, and crown frets with little issue. I found that light pressure and many strokes worked well - it also leaves less heavy file marks on the frets. I would go this route again if I had to, but would like to compare these to the diamond files some day.
