Essential for fretting
The #4491 Double-edge Fret File is one of seven tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Kit, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. Kit also includes our book, Fretwork Step By Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Nice Tool

I have used this file enough that it is finally dull (~35 fret levels). I believe it would have lasted longer if I wasn't engaged in such a steep learning curve when it came to making necks from scratch.

The Medium side of the file didn't have as nice as teeth cut into the file and wide side, so you were limited to using half of the Medium side.

Nice tool though, especially if you don't intend to do a lot of fret work.

I will be upgrading to the Diamond file.

Diamond is worth it!

The price pales in comparison when you realize the longevity and ease of use as compared with non diamond files. Being able to file on push and pull strokes is also a great way to self clean.

An easy tool to use.

I find this tool the easiest option when crowning frets. It cuts aggressively, leaves a reasonably smooth surface, and does not clog. It is easy to control and does not mark the fretboard. The mix of sizes is well considered, and it is certainly a more economical solution than individual files.

The only potential drawback is if you want to produce an odd or non-standard fret profile, then you will need to go old school with a triangular file, but my customers seem satisfied with the profile this tool produces.

Nice file

Very well made and sturdy. I have done two fret jobs with the file and it hasn't worn down any at all, seems like it would last a lifetime. My only conplaint is the file requires a lot of effort. i am thinking of upgrading to the diamond files to save time and energy.

Must have

This file is a must have to finish the fretwire off. I tried to use several others and they did not work. Used this file to repair what I had done.

Double edge fret file

This file works great. It cuts smoother than I expected, but sometimes I wish it were a slightly finer cut.

Worked for Me

I wanted a file to do my own occasional, amateur fretwork. I carefully filed down the few frets in question, then lightly sanded the surfaces with grits from 220 up to 1500 to smooth them out, and polished with chrome polish (I use Simichrome). My guitar is now back in business.
