Essential for fretting
The #4491 Double-edge Fret File is one of seven tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Kit, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. Kit also includes our book, Fretwork Step By Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Why didn't I get this years ago?

If you've spent any length of time re-crowning leveled frets the old fashioned way, you'll kick yourself for not getting one of these sooner, it realy saves time and makes fret crowning MUCH easier.
TIP; Don't ride the file, use a light touch, Let the file do the work. You'll have less chatter and tool marks to polish out.

Good results

I bought the 4490 double edge files for my solid body guitar project. The frets were already installed just needed leveling and crowning after neck set. I used the wooden radius block and the files. I should have bought the fretting kit because it was just a little more than the radius blocks/files. Anyway they were easy to use and got excellent results was able to get 3/64 action with very little rattle.

OK for the Money but top marks to Stewmac.

I first bought the narrow/medium file and it works fine if you clean it after every few strokes. I then bought the medium/wide jumbo fret file and the med jumbo side chattered like crazy and was a nightmare to use. I had a little winge to Stewmac about it and 3 days later there was a brand new complimentary one in the mail box! Expedited shipping USA to New Zealand. Perfect! New one works well. Thanks Stewmac; top score for customer service.

Has a tendency to chatter and is a little more aggressive then I like.

Ibanez S770FM ATF fret leveling recrowning.

I bought this fret file after I recognized that I'm not able to made fret crowning work using self made tool (from some internet project). With this tool I finished fret crowning in 2 hours. This was my first fret levelling work and I strongly recommend buying this tool!
