Each 9/16" x 7-5/8" (14.29mm x 193.67mm) steel file cuts on the edges only, and tapers from the center to a different thickness on each cutting edge. The set of six files does the work of twelve!

Sold individually or SAVE when you buy the set of all six files.

Rubber-coated handles give firm, comfortable control for the job. The complete set includes edge widths for filing round-bottom nut slots on most stringed instruments, including basses. Each file's cutting edge is approximately 3-7/8" (98.43mm) long.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

The most popular Double-edge Nut Files are included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Tip: Customize your files
We recommend that you mark on each side of your files so while working you can quickly tell the different gauge of cut.

Here's how: make a cut on a scrap piece of bone or wood with both sides of the nut file, then measure the width of each cut with feeler gauges to determine which side is which. Guitar strings of known gauges will also work as measuring tools in a pinch.

Once you have determined the proper edge, mark the file accordingly with a permanent marker.

Great files and sharp

These are a great set of files, if there's any drawback is the angle on the files goes wide very fast. This leaves you with a nut with wider slots at the top. Filing down the top of the nut solves the problem but for sure the strings will not get stuck.

mostly great

The files were pretty good. The .105/.120 file was not as straight and true as all the others. On all the slots, I ended up having to use a size up to .015 smaller than the target gauge for the final pass to eliminate the buzzing at the nut. Didn't cause the string to bind or anything doing that. Good thing I left a little extra height just in case & had a spare nut to try again. Wasted one in the process.

NUT FILES

I recently purchased these files as they appeared to be the same as the fine Japanese files I had when I started Luthiery in the mid 1970's. I have to say that having used these new files on a recent Gibson nut I am tickled to death with them! Yes Stewmac lads you found another set of jems! Fine Files and totally useable gauges. A simple Necessary set of Luthiery tools. Good job lads!

Great nut files

I bought these to replace a 30 year old set and to have bass guitar nut widths. They cut so quick I ruined the first nut! Excellent product but I would like some indication of which cutting side corresponds to which size.

Whats all the buzz about?

These files work perfectly for a great fit right from the start. Those days of using random needle files are long gone and so is the buzz.

I'll Wait ....

I have used every set of nut files available and still grab them all up to do a job efficiently w/o compromise. These work well, but I won't spend pending additional sizes I use often.

Double-edge Nut Files

I bought the complete set of files. Im happy with their use and quality of construction. The only thing that I think improved, are the flat edges. Flat edges make flat slotts. I consider the gauged nut slotting files a better option.

Great but need more sizes

Makes filing nut slots a dream, they file like butter. Though there need to be a few more sizes in my my opinion, so that you don't have to rock the file so often if there is a size that's just too big for the gauge
