Professional buffing equipment at a great price!

“Other buffers don't give you enough room to move the instrument, or they run so fast they burn off the finish you are trying to polish. So our guitar builders and tool designers here at StewMac sat down and talked about what we wanted in a buffer, and what we want to avoid. No other company has designed a buffing arbor system so specific for luthiers needs.”

OK but details need improvement

I agree with a previous reviewer. This kit is incomplete. The Stewmac plan included for the base has the mounting holes completely off center to the actual parts. Do not use the plan but measure the actual parts or you'll be doing it all over again if you want an accurate square setup. Mounting hardware would be nice in a complete kit like this. Its a $2 touch to an expensive outfit. The lack of any tension adjustment may or may not be a problem. We'll see. I would have assumed stew mac made the base plans with the spacing in mind to produce a good belt tension/speed. However. judging by the mounting hole placement - I do not have that faith.

Just Okay

This is an ok set up. Without adding an adjustable tension pulley to the belt or motor casing the tension is hard to get right. Would've been nice to supply some mounting bolts but thats not a huge deal...just seems like for a complete set up it is pretty incomplete. took about an hour of extra engineering and modification to make it work for my application.

Highly effective for a novice

I could not be happier with my first buffing experience. It was easy to assemble, easy to mount to my bench. I made my doubled plywood base longer off the back so I had extra clamping/bolting surface for mounting the buffer, 24" long rather than 18" indicated on the included plan. The nuts are 1-7/16 on the arbor. I used two parallel jaw wood clamps to tighten down the buffs. Everything you need comes in the boxes (save for some mounting bolts) I was polishing in no time. Be ready for some mess when you dress the buffs with the rake (looked like I sheered a sheep!) trim the strings with scissors too. Wear old shoes to polish as some compound will go on the floor when you are loading up the buffs. I did 3 lacquered bodies in one session and it was so much faster and easier than doing it all by hand. What I used to dread and spend hours on, I could accomplish in minutes. It is fun. Why didn't I buy one of these sooner? Thank you stew mac for making my finishes come out better and faster!
