Each Japanese Fret Saw is made by hand, and cuts on the pull-stroke. This traditional design greatly reduces blade flex and jamming as you saw a fret slot.

The thumbscrew-adjustable clear acrylic Depth Stop slides up and down for precise control of fret slot depth. It's removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard, or for use with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

TIP: The blade features extremely sharp teeth, with precise .023" kerf to match our fretwire. Because it cuts faster than a standard fret saw, it must be held perpendicular to the fretboard. If not, you can quickly cut a wider slot than you expect. We recommend our Fret Slotting Miter Box for keeping the saw in proper alignment.

Overall length 19-3/4" (501.65mm)
Cutting length 9-3/4" (247.65mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)
Rigid nickel-plated brass spine
Comfortable traditional bamboo handle

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

Need help calculating fret locations?
Our free online fret position calculator works for any scale length, and will also give you accurate measurements for positioning the bridge on your instrument.

Excellent saw

I have used this to widen frets that were too narrow. it cuts cleanly and quickly, it is obviously well-made and I really like it. I haven't used it with the manual slotting box, but I have to think it would be quick work to slot a fretboard with that setup.

Beats my old Sheffield steel saw hands down.

Arrived really quickly, half an hour later I had cut 19 slots (in purpleheart) - normally this takes all afternoon and a lot of cursing. Tried it on an offcut of ebony - good clean slot in a few strokes. Wish I'd bought one of these in the first place. A little tip; leave the paper covering on the depth gauge, then, when you have the depth set draw pencil arrows at the nut and bolt positions. It's then very easy to set the depth next time. If you use more than one depth of fretwire you can have marks for each one.

buy it already

I got this saw last month and finally got the chance to use it. It's amazing. Cut through ebony like it was pine, with no catching or chattering, and the slots were perfect. One of the best building investments you can make.

Japanese Fret Saw ( I can't belive its not butter )

I have been using this fret saw for a very long time now and it is still as sharp as the day it arrived. Very comfortable handle and cuts through hardwoods as though it was like a hot knife through Butter!
Very much worth the price.

Groovy

After years of fretting with a micro-saw, this feels big and chunky in the hand. It is perfect, however, for use with a mitre box - homemade or the amazing StewMac version. Cuts really nicely and is gaspingly impressive to look at. No going back.
