A small plastic-coated counter magnet inside the instrument is attracted by a magnet in the base of the gauge. Pull up the calibrated spring until a "click" indicates separation of the magnets; thickness in millimeters is read from the scale. The counter magnet follows the movement of the gauge, even over braces up to 20mm thick!
The gauge is calibrated for thicknesses up to 8mm, is accurate to 0.1mm (.004"), and is usable in any position.
