Protect a fingerboard in one fast, easy step

Fret Dressing Masks

Read 11 Reviews   |   Write a Review

You've got fret jobs to do. Taping off all the frets is a time-consuming hassle, and time is money! That's why you'll appreciate these innovative die-cut single-use fretboard masks. Profiled and slotted for popular guitars and basses, they protect the fingerboard while exposing the frets for leveling and crowning work. Simply peel away the backing and press in place.

In the time it takes to tape off a fret or two the old way, the fingerboard is fully protected and you're ready to work.

Use a Fret Dressing Mask to protect your fingerboard while polishing the frets with a buffer. The strong adhesive and .004" vinyl is durable, yet flexible to conform to radiused boards.

Like any adhesive tape, do not leave the Fret Dressing Masks on your fingerboard for an extended time. We recommend removing the masks within 4 hours. Do not use on vintage or delicate lacquered fretboards.

Fret dressing mask

This sounded a good idea but I couldn't use it at all. It stuck to everything including itself and I had to abandon it. Very unusual for anything from StuMac not to be excellent but this one doesn't work for me.

Not recyclable either....

I bought one for the heck of it thinking maybe if I stuck it on with my own 2 sided tape and was careful I could recycle it. Nope.

too strong , too expensive

I tried it out, it works only one time, difficult to place and bad to lacquer,
so its too expensive

This will ruin your finish

A luthier used this product on my $1500 Carvin guitar last week. It left a sticky residue and pulled off several large areas of clear coat from the neck. Not only did the luthier have to return the $200 I paid him, he is also going to have to pay to have the guitar refinished.

Not At All Useful

That was a waste! It's perhaps too much to expect any kind of mask to fit all the way up the fretboard. This stuff is sticky, and the backing is so thick it's difficult to peel-as-you-go. I just took it off and used the green (not too sticky) masking tape. Make sure you by narrow (1/2") tape or you'll be masking one fret at a time! Sorry... wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Not purchased

I looked at these and it gave me a few thoughts before I read the reviews. My thoughts were confirmed, these are way too costly, comparing time saved to cost, I would rather spend the 10 minutes taping with blue painters tape than maneuvering this into place and then having a tough time removing it. Make one of these in paper instead of vinyl, like painters trim tape. It will be easier, safer and cheaper in my opinion.

Fret Dressing Masks

Good aid for fret dressing, but for my routine using it is expensive.

Fret Mask works

The adhesive is no more than typical tape. When I need to be extra careful, I simply press the adhesive side on a Tshirt or cotton towel and de-tac it a bit. These are great, save time, and are much better than taping. I would give it 5 stars, but wish there were some for Ric basses.

Not Recommended

I can’t believe anyone at Stewmac actually used this product before adding it to their product list. The mask saved time when applying, however when it comes time to remove it, expect to spend an hour+. The cutouts from the 12th fret down are too short for the frets, so they need to be modified. Be careful when removing, the glue it is way too strong. Needs some rethinking could be a useful product with some work.

Fret Dressing Mask

The name of the company that makes these is "Scary". Now I know why. In my opinion, the adhesive is WAY too strong for use on any but the toughest fingerboard finish. You may dodge the bullet a time or two (I wasn't that fortunate...), but eventually you are likely to have pieces of finish sticking to the mask when you remove it. What was supposed to be a time saver has now created more work.
Good idea, but not carried out very well.
