Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

This unit is nice. It's fast and comfortable to use. Having read some of the other reviews, the phrase smooth finish may be a little misleading as this unit is intended to quickly bring frets close to a desired working height and is more of a roughing in tool. If you've used a standard metal file and experienced "chatter" you'll understand the meaning of "smooth finish". Once your close you can move on to your favorite fret shaping tool to begin the finishing process.

Very coarse. Like some other reviewers, i advise you: get those diamond sharpeners, or a steel beam and stick-it sandpaper.

It is a reliable and durable tool! Sometimes I use it for leveling different parts, not only frets. The main measure to know the possibilities of this tool and do not spoil it.

To reiterate what others have already said, the file is very coarse. The size is good and the handle is nice, but it does leave quite a lot of work as far as crowning and polishing goes.

I wish this could be made with HIGH CARBON Black Steel, so's it will last a bit longer.

I have a 6in. The handle gives good control but I feel that it removes too much material. Be careful and use only little pressure. On a recent project, I started with this file but I finished the levelling with a med-fine diamond sharpening stone (approx 2x6) which gave me much more control. If I were you, I would invest in a general purpose diamond sharpening stone - more expensive but more versatile and easier to use.

Removes material fast, but I found it leaves a VERY rough finish. But not so much of a problem if you are using a sand paper fret leveller afterwards.

My prefered file for fret jobs, tested all other similar files on ebay; no one matches the quality of that file. I also uses a lot the baby size (3"), that I found useful for partial refretting / repair jobs.

The 6" fret leveler is an awesome, well constructed beautiful feeling tool. Top marks Stewmac!

Lawn mower blade from hardware store cut better for me. A lot to pay for a wood handle.
