Our unique Dual-grit Diamond Fret File is two files in one, featuring an angled steel insert with 150 and 300-grit industrial diamond-coated concave cutting surfaces for crowning frets. Switching from one grit to the other is quick and easy; simply unsnap the file from the handle, turn the file around, and snap it in place again. The bent file shape is designed to give you extra clearance over the guitar body for shaping the higher frets. Diamond-coated cutting surfaces work on the forward and backward stroke without chattering, giving you better control for smoothly rounding the tops of the frets. The shape of the handle and 5-1/2" overall length make the tool comfortable to hold, efficient, and easy to control.

Diamond fret files are the best way to recrown your frets! Unlike traditional fret files, diamond files cut in both directions, they don't chatter or leave chatter marks, and the fret is smoother after crowning. These files are being used by repair shops and major manufacturers all around the world.

Our diamond fret files have concave cutting edges, one for medium and small fret wires and one for wide fretwire. Each edge is electro-coated with micro industrial diamonds. These super-tough abrasive surfaces round the frets more smoothly than standard toothed files, for cleaner filing without chatter marks. Because the diamond particles cut on the forward and backward strokes, you get better control over your work and the job goes much faster.

We offer three designs of diamond fret crowning files, each in two different grits. Diamond fret files are available in the traditional Diamond Fret File, the curved Offset Diamond Fret File, and the unique Dual-grit Diamond Fret File. If you're use to traditional fret files, you'll probably be most comfortable with the Diamond Fret File, but you may find the curved design of the Dual-grit Diamond Fret File may allow you to work more comfortably with less arm, wrist, and hand fatigue.

Dual-grit Diamond Fret File is also excellent for working on the frets in the upper registers of acoustic and set-neck electric guitars. They virtually eliminate the chances of "gouging the top".

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

My little workhorse

I have used this on so many jobs and it still cuts excellently. I wouldn't be able to work without it.

Great Set!

Perfect set for all your crowning needs. The quick dual grit change is a plus. Handled my last stainless job well with a little extra effort. Nickle jobs are a breeze. A fantastic tool set.

Superb quality

This diamond file is worth every penny. The angle of the file makes it so easy to re-crown frets and it also works great for minor unleveling jobs. A must buy for any luthier

Buy Diamonds!

I own, and have used both the steel toothed, and diamond fret radius files.
I'm buying only diamond files now. They are worth every penny extra you have to pay for them. I've been using the diamond offset file for 10 years now, and it still works great!

Saved me from a refret!

I had put off buying this tool and had gotten by with the excellent StewMac
3- corner and quarter rounded fret dressing files for smoothing and crowning the odd rough fret etc.
UNTIL
I bought a very used 'players condition' '98 Gibson M3. - a beautiful and odd Gibson indeed -
an all-maple 3 humbucker 2 octave coil tapping shredmeister of an axe!

Although the ebony fretboard was in great condition and the frets had plenty of life in them
the previous owner had fret-levelled them down to a razor sharp totally square profile!
The edges of each fret were so sharp it was impossible to even lightly run
my fingers along the strings while playing or soloing, let alone ROCK OUT!

I needed to get these frets rounded once more.
Having read several StewMac 'Trade Secrets' articles and gone over the accurate descriptions of the tools on offer I ordered the dual- grit diamond fret file.

Wowww! After only a few minutes of careful filing with this baby and those big square frets were once again crowned round and finger- friendly!

As a player and 'semi-luthier' I found the file very easy to use with the diamond grit offering no chatter or grab like a toothed file - also no micro teeth marks or ridges in the fret surface afterward.
I was conscious of not taking too much
off the top of each fret so as to upset the mega - levelling that had been done. I found I was able to glide the file over the frets with little more than its own weight and was able to concentrate on rounding just the edges - and I got uniform results quickly.

Some final vigorous hand rubbing with
the very handy & tough 3M flexible polishing papers, (first 1200 grit then 4000 grit) and the frets were gleaming like chrome, rounded and ready!
A quick restring and the road-worn M3
played like new again.

I would say the previous reviewer who gave this tool 1 star was possibly using it far too heavily - let the diamonds do the work

A big thanks from me StewMac for your
terrific products, clear advice & great service!!

Dual Grit Diamond Files

We purchased these thinking that the idea was good. We purchased the set.

We do not like these at all! We have the offset diamond fret files and like them.

The ball stop/lock is not strong enough to keep the file in place under use. The length of the file away from the handle is not far enough to be confortable. The Handle is not comfortable in your hand.

We would not recommend these.
