These unique tools are for use after the frets have been installed, trimmed flush to the sides, and beveled with a flat file. They go a step beyond our popular Fret End Dressing File, adding a single-cut toothed concave filing surface. This makes smoothing the fret ends and delicately blending them into the crown of the fret more efficient. A professional touch, and a great fix for fret ends that protrude in dry weather, too.

Available in two sizes, for medium and wide frets.
SAVE when you order both sizes!

Efficient design: Each file has a slim shape and 30-degree angled end, for good control and ease of use. The right tool for the job.

Concave surface: Single-cut teeth help blend the fret ends into the fret crown.
    Medium: .080" (2mm)
    Wide: .120" (3mm)

Safe surface: Opposite the concave edge is a flat, untoothed surface to protect the fretboard when you're filing with the side surfaces.

Toothed sides: The single-cut teeth on the sides file away metal burrs and help smooth the bevel on the fret ends.

Safe corners: Each file also has smooth untoothed corners to help prevent damage to the fingerboard and the upper edges of bound necks.

Each of these sturdy steel files is 7-7/8" long (similar files from other suppliers are only 3"), a practical length for filing fret ends without jamming the handle against the edge of the fretboard. Cutting surface length is 2-3/4". The file tang is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Expensive but good

This is a crazy high price for a tiny little file. That said, with this file even an amateur like me can make a substantial improvement in fret ends easily without tearing up the wood. I'm glad to have it.

Concave Fret End File

I bought this file to shave down fret sprout on a customer's Ibanez electric. It worked great and I was able to correct the issue quickly. Don't forget to tape the sides of the fretboard/neck so you don't mar the neck with the file.

Worth the price...

I was really hoping to not like these as I've made due for years with my round over file, 1/4 edge file, and dressing file to shape fret ends. However, these make short order of fret ends. I'll gladly buy them again when my first set dies. Expensive, but worth it!

Concave Fret End Files

There are always new tools coming out that are suppose to make a particular task easy. One would go broke buying all these new wonder tools. But I have to admit, this one was worth the money spent. I just used it for the first time. Dressed the fret ends with ease and speed. A real must have tool. Thank You.

Used it to recrown frets.

The medium file was perfect for recrowning the 0.082" wide frets on my Austin Acoustic. Used a sanding block to level a high fret, blackened the fret with a Sharpie marker, and filed the flattened area with the concave file till only a thin line of black was left on the peak (see photo). Then I polished it with #1 steel wool. Shaped it perfectly and got rid of the buzz.

Concave Fret End Files

I honestly don't know how or more importantly why I ever managed without this file. It has become a mainstay in the top tray of my luthier tool box. I would replace it in a heartbeat if I had to.

Concave Fret End Files

Having worked around guitars for 30 years, I have continuously shopped at Stewart Macdonald and am always interested in investing in new and better tools so in trying out these fret end files, I found they work KILLER. They make short work of and do a stellar job quickly rounding off prickly burrs on freshly bevelled fret ends. What more can I say?-I love 'em.
