A revolution in guitar setup!
Here's a device that will revolutionize the way you set up a guitar. The Nut Slotting Gauge quickly and precisely measures the heights of the strings over the first fret, so you can file nut slot depths more accurately than ever before. That means easier, more consistent playability, that you can custom-tailor to individual instruments and playing styles. No more guesswork or "eyeballing" the string heights, and no more searching for elusive combinations of feeler gauges.

At last! A precision tool for establishing string heights!

The Nut Slotting Gauge was designed by Don MacRostie here in our R & D shop. It features an easy to read dial indicator with adjustable zero point, and it's super accurate to .001". The machined brass base fits over the strings to rest on the fingerboard, and it works with most acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins and banjos. A larger brass base is machined to fit bass string spacings. Both have gently arched bottoms to follow most any fretboard radius. Instructions are included.

The Nut Slotting Gauge is included in this money-saving set:

This one works!

I had previously tried the neck relief gauge, and just couldn't get it to work very well. Most of the problem seemed to stem from the mounting base not being flat, so that the reading you would get varied if you did not keep the gauge perpendicular to the fretboard. Well the nut slotting gauge has a nice flat bottom, and using it is a snap. My one concern is that the item does seem darn fragile, so keep it tucked away safe and don't bash it around.

Super Quality Tool!

This is one of the most used tools I have! Don't know how I did without it for as long as I did. You can use this guage on EVERY setup you do. I have made it a habit to atleast check every guitar that goes through the shop with this guage. Almost every time I check one, I end up selling the extra work of lowering the strings at the nut. Most customers are willing to pay the few extra dollars to get a guitar back that plays like butter. It can be used to measure many other things to, but, this guage gets a workout on the setup bench in my shop!

Time Saver

I use to have to measure string height with feeler guages; a real pain fumbling with them to re-measure for every string. The Nut Slotting Guage is quick and easy to use. A real time saver.
It works so well I bought the Bass Guitar guage also!

If you only buy one guitar tool this year...........

If you're wondering whether this works, take it from me ; it does! No more fiddly inaccurate feeler gauges when setting up, this will do nut slotting, setting the relief, setting the action and individual fret height. Admittedly there's a knack to using it but the saving in time and the 1/1000" accuracy more than make up for it. It'll do Basses without the specialised block too!

Excellent, but handle delicately

I purchased this nut gauge and it works great. There are 2 issues. The dial actually works backwards, not a real big issue as you only need to see the difference with the string up and the string down. The second issue is to handle this device as carefully as possible. The moving stem has to move without any friction at all and with its own weight must move down to the string you are measuring. One single drop off my workbench and the moving stem no longer moves smoothly. Be very very careful with this tool. However I like it so much I just ordered another one and I learned that this is a very very delicate instrument. This mistake cost me $60.

* An Indispensable Tool *

This was one of these tools that I read most of the reviews first as I usually do, but to be frank the reviews put me off a bit, but after struggling on putting a new Earvana nut on my 1973 strat and cutting the string slots to the right depth using the old feeler gauge method. I decided to order the Nut Slotting Gauge, I must say that most of the fears that I had from reading the reviews have disappeared, as I found using the gauge is so much easier than using the old feeler gauge method and it is far quicker too.

Yes I do agree with some of the reviews to a point, you do have to re-check and be careful, but I tend to think that this is due more to the nature of the neck radius that you are using the gauge on. I myself found that when using it to check my strat with a steep 7-1/4 radius fret board there was a little variation in the readings, but I found this mostly to do with the actual position of the gauge as it was too easy to allow the gauge to be measuring one side of the measuring tip and not in the middle. Once I ensured that the tip was centred on the string and the gauge block was sitting square, I found that I obtained very accurate repetitive readings, so much so that I decided to further re-cut the nut slots in the Earvana nut.

I completely re-cut all the slots in the nut far more accurately than using the old method. There is one thing for sure, this is a tool I will use extensively for nut slotting it is extremely accurate and it is now a tool I cannot do without, highly recommended.
