Gauged Nut Slotting Files

Read 150 Reviews   |   Write a Review

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing. Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

TIP: A nut file can be rocked back and forth while cutting, to form a slightly wider slot when necessary.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Thanks

It's impossible to file a slot for an .011 gauge string with a .012 gauge file. Thanks for making all of these sizes available

Great but be careful

These are nice quality files and do the job great. I'm a newbie so learn from my mistake: make sure you cut a wider slot than your string. As I was filing away and checking string height, I didn't realize the string wasn't seating all the way into the new slot. I ended up filing three of my slots way too deep. I found out days later when the strings finally worked their way all the way down. I've learned to rock the file side-to-side more than I anticipated.

Pro Results

Bottom line is if you want pro results you have to use pro tools, no way around it, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Simple is good.

I've tried many different tools and methods for nut slotting over the last thirteen years and have yet to find a more practical and effective means of getting the job done. I have yet to wear one out, even with a few MOP nuts in the mix. You might want to add a "backbone" to the .010" file however. I cut a couple strips of Ipe wood (very stiff) 1/16" X 3/16" X 5-7/8" and ca glued them down the center of each side of the file while holding everything perfectly flat. The wood gives it a nice grip while keeping it straight and rigid. A little bevel on the business end and it still slips into the protective sleeve it came in. I use a little white paraffin to lube the files when they get "bindy" in bone or MOP. Great little (simple) tools.

Tools that perform better than expected.

I recently purchased these nut slotting files and found them to be the perfect solution to a deceptively simple task. Especially for the larger A and E strings

Cuts SLOW!

I've only used them on a pre-slotted, plastic nut so far, and it took forever just to deepen the existing cuts a little bit. Like sawing tree branches with a butter knife.

great tool

works exactly as advertised. Watch out - it's easy to cut too much! The narrower they are, the faster they cut.

Working perfectly, should be better protected

For the job, these files work perfectly. The only drawback is that the paint on the handle end gets smudged in minutes of use, so in order not to lose the gauge markings I had to wrap all my files' ends in clear scotch tape for protection. An extra coat of clear lacquer on the handles would be welcome.
