Natural Wood Bindings

About This Item

Beautiful hardwood bindings are a natural accent preferred by many contemporary luthiers.

Each unbent strip is approximately 0.080" thick, 0.250" tall and 33-1/2" long (2.03mm x 6.35mm x 850.90mm). The optional triple lamination is .010"/.020"/.010" white and black fiber.

For matching top purfling, choose our Violin Purfling Set.

Note: Cocobolo is a naturally oily wood. For best results, clean with acetone and glue with epoxy or super glue.

Nice rosewood bindings. Straight and smooth

natural wood bindings ebony

By

Verified Buyer

As always StewMac's service was impeccable ,however the ebony bindings this time were straight off the saw so there were blade marks on both sides of the bindings, not a huge drama as they will sand out but when you have to sand the inside face before glueing them on that makes a difference in the thickness of course. I have never had this situation with their bindings before. Maybe they should check their supplier.

Good size binding, colors vary from picture

Sometimes customer service trumps catalog pictures.
Cocobolo's color can vary from rich dark to sapwood white, and I was really looking for the dark Cocobolo for bindings. When my order came all I got was white-ish sap wood. Never fear, Stewmac's superior customer service saved the day!
I like this size binding, as it is ready to use without any more milling.

Quality is inconsistent

I ordered another set of curly maple binding with bwb purfling line attached to complete two new building projects, and I was surprised to find that the surface of two of the ordinarily smooth strips of maple binding was marred by machining marks. There were circular saw-like marks that were clearly visible, but I didn't dare run the strips through my thickness sander for fear they would be too thin to fit the binding ledges routed into the body. Instead, I chose to install them with the rough sides out and level them to the sides after the fact. The steam from bending raised the grain and increased the roughness of the surface, making it necessary to remove even more thickness to get everything flush. I ended up doing much more sanding than I had intended, and much more that I usually have to do to get everything true. The photo show one typical binding strip and one rough strip for comparison. I was surprised at the difference in quality, as most of the time these binding strips are good. The only other time I had trouble was when I got one strip last year that tapered down in thickness on both ends, making it unusable. I have bought materials and tools from StuMac since 1980, so I am hoping this is just a glitch.

nice time saver

I've used a few of the wooden bindings from stewmac. The maple bends really nice and easy and the pieces I've gotten have a good figure. The cocobolo I recently got had a nice uniform orange-ish color and bent really nice (and smelled great!). I've broken a couple of pieces of ebony and bloodwood, but once I slowed down I got the hang of those as well. like all things with binding, take your time.

Curly Maple binding with B/W/B Purfling

By

Verified Buyer

I had ordered the Curly Maple Bindings with Purfling last year and installed on a guitar. The results were AMAZING. The Curl was magnificent and the Purfling was striking, as it delineated the Sides from the Binding in crisp detail.
I re-ordered the same a few weeks ago, and the Bindings had absolutely NO curl. I thought I had ordered Plain Maple, but realized they did not list any plain maple.
I e-mailed Stew-Mac and they immediately responded and sent 7 new bindings, with a return label. I put the old bindings in the heavy duty shipping tube, taped on the label and dropped off at Post Office.
If you have questions about a product, just e-mail or call them; they always seem happy to help. If you are unhappy with an item you receive, just contact them and I'm sure they will do everything they can to satisfy you.
Thanx Stew-Mac, Gratefully, John Michael Jordan Hialeah, Florida.

broken wood bindings

I received my order, a replacement for the wrong item, after calling customer service, within a couple of days. The box containing the bindings had been bent and the binding snapped in half. I called customer service and they quickly sent out a replacement which arrived a couple of days later in a battered box with the contents also snapped in half. I called customer service and asked for a refund which they did within a couple of days. I give customer service 5 stars and packaging 0 stars resulting in a total of 3 stars. SM should pack delicate items better to avoid this problem.

I've used many a stewmac wood binding and they are always consistently high quality. The Cocobolo is my favorite. Looks great with amber shellac.

Bent binding

Second time I have tried purchasing this binding and second time I have been dissapointed. It is bent and warped in both directions. I salvaged 4 of 12 Bloodwood and Curly Maple and sent the rest back.

Damaged and not properly packed

By

The woods bindings were not packed in a cardboard pipe which caused damage on top of 4 of the woods during transport. They were flaked and broken.
If I were not an old customer of you, I would change my provider definitely.

Response from StewMac

We are very sorry to hear these were damaged when they arrived. I sent you an email regarding getting these replaced. We are happy to get you what you need. - Spencer, Customer Support
