Pros: Beautiful and consistent in color and shape. A real breeze to install with epoxy or acrylate. The fit is very tight to the hole made with the corresponding drill. Cons: Some may find the dots to be a little thin. I like them that way, I install them in very shallow and precision drilled holes. Some people would prefer more working height, to allow for deeper sanding/planing the fretboard.
A very pretty and consistent product. No complaints.
These dots look great and are easy to install.
Easiest to do on a bare slotted unfretted installed fingerboard. Just drill a shallow flat-bottomed hole with a 1/4" Forstner bit, put a drop of Crazy Glue in, and press in the dot. Then level it with the wood with a file, not sandpaper, and polish. Even without the glue, the dots are tight, so don't test fit them.
The often-seen method of drawing X's between the frets to mark center is not accurate at all, draw a centerline and then mark crosses with a ruler or even just a Mk I eyeball.
Impressive accuracy, Good price.
what else do they need to be?
These are the real deal, indistinguishable from the OEM dots on my guitars that have dots. That's why I was pleasantly surprised how inexpensive they are on StewMac. I scalloped one of my fretboards from the 13th fret up, and of course destroyed the dots on those frets in the process. I thought about leaving it as is, since "distressed" is kind of the theme of that guitar to a certain extent anyway; but when I saw how cheap it was to replace them, I ordered a few, drilled a shallow hole in the recessed fretboard and glued these in. Hey presto! Fixed!
Very nice dots. Diameter is cosistent, and pearl looks great.
Since I patronize StewMac a good bit I am glad you have a small selection of basic inlays available so that I don't always have to buy inlays from another source. Dots, stars, and diamonds are about all I am capable of inlaying anyway so it is convenient to buy them where I shop most often.
The consistant quality and quick shipping will keep me coming back for more. This restored Wolfram Trimuph (1893) vintage plays and sounds great and the pearl dot in the patented unremovable bridge peg fit exactly.
