Violin Bow Hair

I have been using Stew Mac bow hair to rehair the many bows that I do. It is just the right amount. It leaves enough to comb out and still have plenty for the job. And it is not too much. It is a real time saver. GREAT JOB Stew Mac. Larry Threet, Luthier, Lexington SC

Back in February, I purchased 3 hanks of bow hair from Stewart-MacDonald and had trouble with all 3. As I told the tech when I called "it could've been my fault, and may have been bad installation". However, I've done this before and never had issues and I was extra careful with these as I was going to use them for live performances, which is why I called for assistance. (They refused to take rosin and remained "slick" after installation.)

The tech insisted on shipping me 3 new hanks, no charge, and also gave me some very helpful information. (Not all horse hair or processing of the hair is the same as it turns out. Brushing or soaking them briefly with denatured alcohol is a good thing to use prior to installation.)

The complete lack of discussion over who was at fault will make me a return customer (even if it may have been my fault).

I have never been dissapointed with the products that I have ordered from Stew/Mac. I have ordered a big variety of supplies since I am a luthier who will work on and build most any acoustic instrument that comes my way. The only possible neggative that I have found about the bow hair is that sometimes I feel that there should be a few more strands of hair in each bow hair package. Some people like really thick hair and some like less. So it would be nice to be able to customize the hair as to the customers likes or dislikes. Any questions I have ever had that pertain to items I have bought from Stew/mac have been completely answered and taken care of.

I would highly reccomend this company for all your needs but also would say that if you shop around there is also cheaper buys out there but you will have to find out the quality and service to see if they compare to Stew/mac.

If you do not do a lot of re-hairing, these hanks are a good choice. The quality is great and, with the amount pre-sorted and tied off, this is a great time saver.

I just re-haired a handmade bow and your horsehair did the trick. I have used other hair but I found
Stew-Mac's combed out faster and easier.
