It's a shaped piece of plastic, not much more to it than that! If you need it, then it's great that you can buy it here (like so much other useful stuff). If you are using the matching template, do a few test runs on scrap first as I found I needed a few wraps of tape around the router bearing to get a better fit. Allow for the thickness of the finish. I bought the cover plate really to act as a template for making wooden covers to match the control cavity templates. It seems substantial but the edges need quite a bit of finishing which sort of defeats the purpose. This and the related templates are products that probably could do with review by StewMac.
This is a large cover. I installers 6 knobs and a pickup selector switch. and I had a lot left over so much in fact that I was able to cut a truss rod cover from this piece and still had a large scrap left.
The cover's fit is way too sloppy in the cavity routed with the cavity template set. The whole point of buying the cover and the cavity templates is so that they match perfectly. The cover is undersized over a sixteenth of an inch in some spots, and even worse, it's not consistently undersized around the whole shape. So you can't even use a not-quite-flush bit with the cavity template in order to match the cover. Basically, I had to route a copy of this cover with a 1/16 larger bearing, and then sand extensively to make it fit the cavity.
Used with SM's templates this cover fit like socks on a rooster. I wish SM offered this cover in exotic woods. :)
It looks great and feels strong. Size is good too, letting you cover a nice sized cavity. I had plenty of room to wire a toggle switch and 4 push/pull pots.
Great look, and the perfect thickness to make you feel it is strong.
