We recommend using a 5/8" diameter counterbore, Forstner, or brad-point drill bit to recess these neck bolt ferrules to 3/16" standard depth (this may vary according to instrument design). The suggested 5/8" diameter is slightly oversize to allow for finish thickness in the recess. Use a 15mm bit if you plan to fit the ferrule with no finish in the recess.

work like a charm

I was trying to set the neck on the 'bird as far out as possible, and these ferrules bought me about 3/4" over a standard neck plate, and also installed neat and flush. Definitely use a Forstner bit.

Works well

I used a 15 mm Brad drill and in they go. nice snug fit and look great as well. As you get 12 in the pack I will continue to use these ferrules.

Neck Mounting Ferrules

Well made, quality product. Its a small and basic item but obviously well made. Every detail matters when I make my guitars. No matter how small the parts is, its got to be perfect and this ferrule is.

Neck Mounting Ferrules

An excellent product, does exactly what it is supposed to. I had no issues with using a 5/8 bit, it was actually a very, very snug fit, maybe this is because I had several layers of clear coat ranging from gloss to matt to give a sort of holographic effect?

Non-the-less a great product! Thanks StewMac!

Nice Little Pieces

These are nice little pieces, but they are not 5/8" in diameter. A 15mm Forster is the way to go for a nice tight fit.

1001 uses for old neck plates

I recently built a bcustom Hot-Rod for a friend's son for Christmas. StewMac's neck ferrules went on in place of the neck plate. This went so well, I'm incorporating them into the building of all future bcustom instruments. I did find out something the hard way. The 5/8" bit appears to me to be too big. I did mine with a 9/16" spade bit and hogged out the rest with my trusty Dremel 395 and the large sanding drum.
This makes the ferrules a press fit. They don't fall out of the body if the neck is removed. The 5/8" hole allows them to shift around, and looks loose to me. But, it's a huge difference. I learned something else. A small hole in the body from the factory, gets covered by a neck plate. I plugged it with ash dowel and sanded it flush. Hole is now undetectable. So I've got neck plates for sale if anyone wants one.

Good but dimensions off

I really like these ferrules but the spec calls for a 5/8" counterbore. Unfortunately this leaves too much extra space for the ferrule and shows gaps when the ferrule is in place. A 9/16" counterbore is too small so if you have a grinder and a caliper you may want to grind down a 5/8" spade bit to the ferrule dimension for a nice clean fit.

Okay

They are good for wood screws and the finish is great quality plating, but I am in search of ferrules for machine screws and the head angle doesn't match. :(

Really great ferrules for wood screw neck joints, though!
