Fret End Dressing File

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for fretting
The Fret End Dressing File is one of seven tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Kit, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. Kit also includes our book, Fretwork Step By Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great tool

Use with care, & u can dress those rough fret ends for a neck that feels like a $5k boutique or custom shop guitar. Put some frog tape or good quality masking tape on each side of the fret before filing, so you don't ding the wood.

Nice tool

Another specialty tool, and StewMac comes to the rescue with this nice cheap solution. Good for the final touches on a fret dress.

Fret Not

Here in the arid West, we get a lot of wooden neck shrinkage, between increasingly dry Summers and forced-air-heated Winters. So it was a relief when StewMac's rep recommended this little dressing file -- it takes some time, but it does allow an unskilled technician like myself to de-burr the edges of a beloved fretboard that has turned into a sawblade of self-abuse, without harming the actual instrument neck.

Just about right.

I like the file shape but it could stand to be a fair bit more fine.

Fret dressing file

Great tool. I would have gave it 5 stars, but the price is a little high.

For Those Details

The one thing I did do with my file before use was to highly polish the safe corners/surfaces on a belt sander equipped with a 3M abrasive nylon belt-just to make sure I would not get grooves in the binding edge. I have the other S-Mc tri-corner fret files and this fits into the routine just fine- I prepped those the same way before use. Price is right too.

Very Fine File

This thing works much quicker than you might think! My only concern is that in the picture it looks like they're trying to file with the "safe" edge!
