Cleaner refret jobs

Teflon Fret Dam

Read 10 Reviews   |   Write a Review

It's hard to avoid a few fingerboard chips when pulling out old frets. A piece of this .020" non-stick Teflon® in the fret slot will help keep your epoxy or super glue out of the slot as you replace or fill the chips. It pulls out easily after the glue is dry. You'll do a cleaner job, save work, and make refretting easier. The .020" x 6" x 6" (.508mm x 152.4mm x 152.4mm) sheet can be trimmed with scissors to the re-usable sizes you need.

Does the job.

No need to make long sentences, this item does the trick, and does it well.

Work Cleaner

As stated before this stuff has many uses, but all in all if you use glue this can make your work cleaner.

I use this stuff for so many other things

This stuff is great for sticking in the fret slot to dam up sawdust and super glue but I find myself grabbing a sheet or two out of my tool box all the time. Protecting/shimming clamping cauls from glue, sliding magnets, slippery shims sanding block spacers…????? I can’t remember all of the uses but I have several sheets handy at all times

Mixed Feelings

It fits the slot well and cleans up nice after use, but I'm having a real problem with this material carrying a serious static-charge. Half of the time it removes the dust I just carefully placed into a divot for repair! I have better luck using the "fret slot depth gauge" as the spacer.

Handy stuff for fretwork

Great for filling chips, also when patching steam holes left after resets. Given you can reuse the stuff - because the CA won't stick to it - the sheet Stewmac sends will get you through countless fret jobs. Inexpensive time-saver.

So many uses - ideal for fingerboard prep!

Whilst it obviously works well as a dam when glueing next to a fret slot, there are other great uses for this product . The main use I love these sheets of teflon for are for assisting in adding fall away to a fingerboard using the stewmac radius beam. Stack a couple of sheets of this under the end of the beam at the end nearest the nut and level away towards the end of the fingerboard .
The teflon makes it easy for the beam to slip and slide how you need it too and doesn't seem to wear away. We also do the same thing when leveling frets - fall away is key to a great fret-job

Great Idea, However!

I love the idea, unfortunately the thickness of the material hinders it's use. I recently re-fretted a classic Maple fingerboard and the fret slot was thinner than the Teflon material. I tried everything I could to squeeze the material into the slot and it just wouldn't go.

I'm sure it works great with the newer larger fret tang slots but in the classics, it just didn't work out. If a thinner size would be available in the future, I've got the money in hand right now.

teflon fret dam

Chinese made guitars and poor quality fret material along with "green" fret boards makes these items a necessary accessory to clean up the neck for a better than factory fret job.

Great for mixing epoxy

I use these Teflon sheets to mix and deliver the mixed epoxy. I let it harden on the Teflon, bend the Teflon and what does not flake off is easily removed with a wood putty knife.
