Undercuts fretwire cleanly, in one operation
Fret Tang Nipper
Our friend Bill Collings (the founder of Collings Guitars) suggested the idea for this simple and precise tool. It does an outstanding job of undercutting fretwire to fit over neck bindings, and speeds up fret jobs on bound necks. It's easy to use simply insert the wire to the desired depth in the guide notch, squeeze the handle, and the wire is cleanly undercut.

#1626 is for .075"-.095" (1.90mm - 2.41mm) fretwire widths. Use #1649 for .100"-.120" (2.54mm - 3.05mm) wire. Overall length is 6" (152.40mm), including 4" (101.60mm) rubber-coated handles.
The Fret Tang Nipper is not just for bound fingerboards!
While Collings developed the Fret Tang Nipper to help in fretting bound fingerboards, Dan Erlewine discovered the tool's uses knows no bounds!
Clipping the excess fret end after it's installed in an unbound fingerboard leaves a mangled, distorted edge and can unseat the fret. You want to start dressing the fret end, but instead you are correcting the twisted "T" the cutter left behind.
If the end of the fret tang is removed before the fret's installed only the fret crown overhangs, and it can be clipped easily without the twisting that happens when the tang is intact. Using the Fret Tang Nipper removes the cleanly removes tang in a jiffy, leaving only the crown to then cut and dress.
Fret Tang Nipper is also ideal for bound fingerboards.
