Fret Fitter

Read 8 Reviews   |   Write a Review

This 2-in-1 tool is based on techniques developed by repairman Frank Ford.
  • Crimps the tang for oversize fret slots
  • Flattens the barbs for tight fret slots

Use the Fret Fitter to resize the barbed tang for easier fretting in harder woods, to control fret compression and neck stiffness, and to help prevent or relieve backbow.

The hardened steel Fret Fitter has custom jaws for flattening the barbs to fit a tighter slot, or for pressing a slight scallop into the tang to fit an oversize slot. You simply vary the pressure of the tool as needed.

Overall length: 7" (178mm)
Jaw width: 13/32" (10.24mm)
Comfortable rubber-coated handles.

The Fret Fitter is included in our money-saving Fret Tang Tool Set along with the Fret Barber, our handy tool for quickly trimming the barbs on longer lengths of fretwire.

We recommend our book FretWork Step By Step for details on the technique of compression fretting.

Perfect tool

A must in getting those frets shaped for proper fit in you new or reworked fret slots. Money well spent for this kid!

Great tool,high priced

This tool is very useful especially on older fretboards, but at just under 80.00 dollars you would have to do 2 or 3 jobs to make a profit.Tool is a must have for any shop doing fret jobs.

Jaws

The pliers work very well. I suggest measure the adjustment and put a few frets in an old fingerboard to get a feel for how frets go in.

Good but over priced

It does what it says and does it well. But I was a little disappointed with the finish quality, there was primer overspray on the handle. I am not looking for a wall flower but for near $80 I want it perfect.

good but not great

This is a nifty little tool, it certainly helps you to crimp frets so they will bind in the slot better. I liked that it had a mild and a heavy crimp size so that you could avoid excessive crimping when applicable. However the tool is not very complex and should not be priced as much as it is. Its really only worth about half of what i paid.

Three uses

This tool is fantastic! I was nervous at first to buy it since I think it is expensive, but it is well worth it. I needed this due to my large fret gaps left from the fret saw (read saw review), and this widened the tang perfectly. I called the title of this review three uses because you can really use it for three different functions.

1) widening fret tang

2) narrowing fret tang

3) works well for bending individual frets as well!

Fret Fitter

This is a great upgrade (improvement) from the older version. It's a two in one tool and it does the job.

Indispensable

I do the most difficult fretting ever. Imagine deep radius like cello; I build bowed guitars. This makes average guitar fretting seem like a walk in the park. Without this device, reliably doing this type of work is a crap shoot whereby new ways of cussing and tool throwing are invented. CA glue and careful pre-bending on these deep radius necks are not enough to keep re-coil from happening. The Fret Fitter is Required equipment here. I do not know how I survived for so many years without it.
