Behlen Tung Oil

oil does a great job of freshening up drying fingerboards. i'm sure it will also do a great job of body finishing.

im almost done with a project i set out with to make my perfect guitar ... i decided to use this oil on the neck and i tested it on some scrap wood first ... as soon as i applied it the darkness showed and i was slightly displeased but the feel of it is perfect and exactly what i was looking for ant the directions on the can worked as stated so it was very easily applied.

i guess i will have to try to find a way to make thinner coats before i put it on the real thing

I am really happy with the oil. I have refinished a number of necks and even a complete Squire body (after dying it with Fiebings' dye). Totally worth the money and the amount is more than enough if you'r enot a pro repair shop.
I did mess up though and I need help that I cannot find info about anywhere. I managed to spill quite a bit on my carpet, I did clean it immediately with rags and had a bottle of Oxy clean for carpets right next to me so I cleaned it within seconds. but I read online that rags soaked in tung can be self combustible and I am really scared -- I have radiant floor heat and I think one of the spots that heats up is under the "stain' (mind you there is absolutely no trace of the tung, just smell, and I even checked underneath it on the hardwood floor). How can I clean it should I replace the carpet altogether? I can't find info anywhere :(

This stuff is definitely 100% pure. This is both a good and a bad thing. Because it's pure, the look you get is fantastic. The guitar I finished with it was African mahogany and hard rock maple. The mahogany took on a golden depth and the maple a nice glow. Also because it's pure, however, you will age visibly while it dries. The first few coats only needed a day each, but around the seventh I was waiting a week between coats.

Drying time aside, my only complaint is shine. You get the depth of an oil finish, which is fine for furniture, but not the high-gloss sheen an instrument needs. I would recommend finding a cut oil like Liberon finishing oil for two final coats if you want high-gloss.

This stuff takes forever to dry. Use mineral spirits to speed it up.

This is the good stuff. I'm not thinking it's 100% pure Tung oil, but I could be wrong. You will definitely need to cut it with spirits/turps or it will leech from the pores forever. (that is if you don't do grain filling)

Amazing finish, easy to apply, and perfect for guitar necks. Apparently it's very easy to repair as well. Also thins out well in a 50/50 mix with mineral spirits, and work great as a sealer coat.

I gave my custom - build 7 total coats of this fantastic oil. What a sweet finish! The guitar top is pecan over alder. The neck is 100% pecan.

I recently purchased a 16 oz can of Behlen Tung oil and used it to finish two guitars I built.One I finished with 5 coats of Tung Oil and it came out great. the second I used 4 coats and topped it with two coats of Tru-Oil,again with great results. A highly reccomended product when you don't want to bother spraying a finish.I really brings out the grain of an Ash Body. I also used it to oil the necks of the Guitars,again with great resuts.Thanks Stew Mac!
