Dissolve shellac in Behkol solvent or denatured alcohol, in the amount you need for the job—no wasted finish or shelf life problems.

ColorTone® Shellac makes an excellent sealer over stains and under lacquer (helps keep fisheye-causing contaminates out of topcoats, too) and is useful for finish repairs and touchups. When the dry flakes are dissolved in alcohol the resulting shellac can be brushed, wiped on, French polished (using mineral oil as a lubricant), or sprayed in thin coats. Shellac has good clarity and compatibility with most finishes, is easy to rub out, and easy to repair with additional shellac.

My favorite shellac

I have been using this shellac for several years and it is great. Always consistent and dependable for French Polish. Thanks StewMac

Easy to work with sealer

I grabbed a small bag to use on a few projects after dealing with fish-eye. I had no issue dissolving the flakes in DNA and application was a snap. So far no issues with the finish coats this time around.

Shellac

First time user of shellac. Looks nice, builds faster than I had expected. I mixed it with the "regular" denatured alcohol that you get from the big box stores, not the recommended denatured alcohol. Worked well. I took a guess and used the 1-1/2" of denatured alcohol to cover the flakes method vice measuring and weighing the flakes, since I do not have a small scale, and I wanted to mix in very small batches. Therefore I don't know what cut I have. But as mentioned, it looks really nice and builds fast.... Great stuff. Don't be afraid to try. I was afraid to try for a long time. Easy to work with.

awesome of French Polish

tried the shellac for french polishing a maple tele neck. Product was easy to mix and fully dissolved in denatured alcohol in 24 hours.Be prepared with some measuring cups to measure out the desired "cut". Each packet of shellac flake came with a measuring table for the various "cuts" of shellac, really taking guess work out of the equation and gives a nice reference for the next time

Platina Shellac

The shellac I received wasn't in normal flakes, it was in granules and clumps as if someone had ground them up, or they had melted? However, they seemed to dissolve OK.

Best finish yet!

I got the Blonde shellac and it is just the best finish I have seen yet! It takes some work but if you follow the directions given by Dan Earlewine you will get great results as Dan demystifies the art of French Polish. Thanks Dan!

Great finish

First time using french polishing technique on a restoration. Came out exactly as I wanted and amazingly easy way to achieve a great finish. Stewmac makes available not only to the pro's but also smaller quantities for us just doing smaller projects. Thanks!

go natural

French polishing is the only way you can apply a finish at your kitchen table in the middle of winter! You just have to keep a little orange juice on the table to soak up any extra everclear
