Instructions
ColorTone® Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler; over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Spray additional coats of ColorTone Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer for a hard, durable finish with a deep gloss.

Ideal for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. It's fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface. Tinted coats should not be sanded. In our recommended video Spray Finishing Basics, Dan Erlewine demonstrates helpful tips on using aerosols.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Great way to add some vintage warmth to your finish.

I used this on a late nineties Squier neck I bought for a project and it made the Chinese maple neck look like a 60 year old vintage Tele neck. The spray pattern and flow were good as were its ability to seal and cover some minor imperfections. Highly recommended if you like a warm vintage look.

Smooth as Silk

For my first finishing job ever, this lacquer was fantastic. I heated the cans in warm water and the spray was smooth as silk. The How-To articles on the StewMac site we easy to follow. I can't believe this finish came out of a can! Starting my second finishing job in a few weeks with ColorTone Lacquers.

Tinted lacquers were excellent, but the black had problems.

My son was building a bass guitar for his senior project, and he wanted to do a sunburst finish on it. After reviewing the Trade Secret on doing a spray can sunburst finish, we were slightly less intimidated to give it a try. The tinted lacquers worked perfectly and sprayed in a nice fine mist when warmed. The black however, was a different story.

We just couldn't keep it from splattering and it went on too thick even when warmed. As a result, we weren't able to get the fading effect on the black edge. Unfortunately, we had to finish it due to his deadline, but we'll probably refinish it later and try it again with a different brand of black.

Other than that, the tinted lacquers were great. We used the vintage amber and cherry red, and the colors were beautiful.

Great stuff

When I ordered this product, I had no idea what to expect. I was building my first guitar and was curious how Ibanez and such got such great finishes. With this product, I now understand. It is highest quality, easy to use and does all I want. When the guitar is finished, I will post a pic

Tinted Lacquer

I liked the color just don't get in a hurry. Spray several light coats and let tack off between coats. The price with shipping is very expensive for a spray can of paint. Guess I'm going to start trying to mix my own, but if you want quick and easy this works.

Tinting a Neck- by a newby!

Very happy with the instructions and information on the product. Being my first time tinting a neck , I was quite happy with the professional result and little fuss it took to achieve it. Results were far better then I expected. I have already ordered more.

Color toned Aerosol

The vintage amber was the perfect shade to do the neck of the banjo I,m restoring. Like it said, multiple coats until desired shade is reached. In my case it was 11 coats. Thanks

Tinted Lacquers

some mixed results for me. the Cherry Red is great, perfect even. The Amber is a little too Orange so be careful with this and apply sparingly, it will get too heavy quickly. The Tabacco tint is WAY too dark and opaque, my edges went almost black very quickly and any overlap was very noticeable. Had to sand it all off and start over with a different brand's tobacco tint.

I was going for more of a vintage tobacco sunburst, like a Hofner tint, this is probably better suited to a high contrast late 50's Fender style, but not quite black enough for that, proceed with caution. the nozzles spray a little heavy for sunbursting, in my opinion.
