ColorTone® Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable opaque black gloss finish that can be clearcoated with ColorTone Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss. Convenient 13-ounce spray can.

ColorTone® Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler, and over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer. It's ideal for touch-up work, or for an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal the wood before the black coats are applied. Spray only enough black to hide the wood; most of the final finish thickness should be sprayed with clear gloss topcoats.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Not a good nozzle design.

I have been trying to use the black for a suburst finish where the sides are black and it fades into a mixture of amber and cherry. Well i have spent about $60 so far on more cans of black and sanding sealer because the black spits so much i have to sand down and start over again. Even after heating the cans and cleaning nozzles often. i keep thinking i will get a can that don't spit. should have went to a different supplier.

Great product

The first time I tried it, I did as directed and put the can in warm water and kept it there for ten minutes. When I did a test spray, I still had some spitting so I soaked the can for 30 minutes and didn't have any problems, the paint came out smooth and evenly.
A good tip is to also buy one of those spray handles that attach to the top of the can from your local hardware store, it cost a couple bucks and gives you easier control of spraying and you have a trigger to squeeze instead of a button to push.

Very impressed

I bought the black lacquer to try out on a strat that had been pretty beat up. I did some sanding to level the surface and started spraying. I sprayed several "dry coats" to help avoid runs and it's building up nicely. I'm very surprised how well it covers. I started this not expecting it to look pro, but it's a lot closer than I originally thought.

Very Jazz

Awesome stuff. I just finished my first body and it looks great. I covered it with a few cans of clear gloss and am looking forward to buffing it out in a few weeks.

Black Strat

This is now my third project with the ColorTone Lacquer. I used the sealer, Black Lacquer, Amber Lacquer and Clear Lacquer. Very Happy with the results

Just average

I must echo the comments that either the nozzle system or solids-to-solvent ratio needs work. I bought the black aerosol lacquer can for an SG refinish project. I warmed the lacquer and still got significant spits and runs which must be sanded out, while I wait for the weather to provide another spray-able day. The nozzle sits too low to the can top so a portion of the spray hits the lip of the can which interferes with the stream. The nozzle is also very clumsy, its barely attached, wobbly, and hard to vary pressure consistently. At full pressure, the coat goes on smooth but runs very easily requiring sanding. At medium pressure, the coat is rough and not heavy enough to opaque sealed mahogany in one pass. I know its not an airbrush, but compared to other aerosol lacquer on the market this is mediocre, its just hard to find black. My topcoat of choice is another brand of aeresol cans which have a vastly superior nozzle mechanism where you can easily vary pressure with no stream issues and is much more forgiving of variations in the spray pattern.

Good stuff

Color Tone black spray lacquer goes on well, dries fast, and looks terrific under a polished clear coat. I only wish it came in more colors.

Looks good

First of all I want to say that this was a very good choice to buy, I put it on my custom made Rhodes Guitar and putting it on top of grain filler and then covering it in another layer of clear gloss I got the black glossy look I was going for. After that all dried out I put in gold hardware and that thing rocks and always gets heads turning so all in all I recommend this product but if you really want to get a nice solid black and if you are doing everything including the back of the nck I think gettin more than one can would be good
