ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Stew-Mac finish

Hi folks,
So I used the Stew-Mac line of finishing products after years of using lots of different brands. I was very pleased with their products and the tips are great for you beginners.
My only words of wisdom for those out there is take your time and never rush a finish.
customer service is great as well.
Thanks Stew-Mac

Good stuff!

Used this on a neck first. Went on well, but runs easily if you're not careful. Sealed the mahogany beautifully.

Good stuff! With practice, you can get just about any shade you desire. Easy to work with after you get the hang of it. Be sure to follow the directions and use the handy tips from Stew-Mac. They know what they're talking about. I love it! Very satisfied. Will by more.

Great for guys like me w/out compressor

You can actually do pro work w/ cans? Yes. I bought and read Dan's book on guit finishing (a great book). But you can do this w/out the book just w/ the instructions on the can. This was my first project of trying to do it right, w/ guit finishing. It was an SX Resonator guitar. Nice wood, but a crappy finish to start with.

I stripped it, then used the StewMac sanding sealer then gloss lacquer. I did about 20 coats, which used around 3 or 4 cans (can't remember). I'm super happy w/ the result. I still have to do the final sanding/buffing. But now i know: guitar finishing is doable by amateurs like me! So go for it!

Good stuff

The lacquer performs as advertised. It's over priced but helps for small projects.

ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquers are excellent!!!

As recommended, I warmed the cans in hot water before spraying in a low humidity environment. I achieved a totally professional finish! See the pic of my refinished strat body (not yet assembled though - it's drying for two weeks - very important!).

WARNING: USE ADEQUATE VENTILLATION AND A PROPER RESPIRATOR WHEN USING THESE SPRAY CAN PRODUCTS! ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is nitrocellulose and creates very dangerous fumes! Also, your house WILL STINK FOR WEEKS if you spray indoors, so go out to the garage or outside.

My project was: I completely sanded down and filled my 35 year old Ibanez strat copy mahogany body (also has maple front/back veneer), then I...

- sealed/primed/sanded it four times
- shot the ColorTone Black Gloss four times as a basecoat, sanding/filling between coats as necessary with 400 grit wet/dry
- shot one custom-stencilled highlight pattern (using a third-party magenta lacquer on the front and back of the body
- shot the edge in Black Gloss once again for a pseudo-black sunburst effect
- shot 9 coats of clear satin (no sanding required between clear satin coats - hurray!). This clear satin works wonders - the flatteners in it are really good.

I left at least 2 hours between coats and never more than 3/day. My results were amazing! I will use this product line again.

Clear gloss and Satin spray can Nitrocellulose

Both of these products are top notch. I'd been using another company's clear nitro since I bought the Nitro Paint from them, but the Stew Mac is less $ and goes on much more evenly. It's amazing what you can do with Spray cans! :-)

Lacquer finish in aerosol can.

Clear satin lacquer was used to finish a bolt on guitar neck. I've ordered more to do a sunburst guitar finish on a re-topped 30's Kalamazoo Gibson.

Lacquer worked like a charm!

I used the Clear Satin and it worked nicely. I was able to apply several coats, wet sanding between coats. Final finish on guitar was great.
