Instructions
ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface. In our recommended video Spray Finishing Basics, Dan Erlewine shares helpful tips on aerosol spray finishing.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Consistent Results

I'm an amateur craftsman, but do own many high end guitars. This product is very easy to use, produces a consistent result that looks professional. It works best when warm, and it took several cans to get a showroom finish, but I love it!

Great Product!!!!

I was using Clear Nitrocellulose from ReRanch. One day I was in a bind and a friend told me about Stew Mac so I ordered some from them (got it the next day). Compared to ReRanches Clear, Stews was almost instantly glossy. I wish Stew would offer Nitro Colors in Aresol cans like ReRanch I'd be buying the paint from them as well...

Good Lacquer

The lacquer works well. It is best if the dew point is 20 degrees less than the present temperature

Excellent product - Easy to use

I've used ColorTone Aerosol on lots of guitars with superior results.

The Les Paul Deluxe in the picture had been stripped and "refinished" by the previous owner :-( It had a long crack that ran between the lower volume and tone control. After sanding the body and filling and sealing the crack, the customer and I decided to go with a tobacco burst to help hide the crack.

The burst was done with Colortone Tobacco Brown tinted lacquer. The clear is Colortone Clear Gloss.

The owner was very pleased with the finish.

If you don't have a spray rig this is the way to go.

Great lacquer for the limited shop

I work in a small space and have to do all my spraying outdoors. The aerosol format has its disadvantages (esp. slower build & rougher texture) but you can't beat it when you don't have access to a compressor. The final results are just as good.

Saving the Gibson

This product worked very well. The spray was fine enough to be able to lay multiple thin layers in order to build up the lacquer.
The phone support and guidance was superb! They were patient and helpful.
I was at "wits end". This was a total amateur repair. Luthiers would not touch it because the amount of time due to so many thin build up layers. The spray lacquer worked fantastic.
In the picture I'm pointing to the area that was repaired. That lower bout corner was bare wood before I started putting down layers. I'm still polishing (by hand) but a professional luthier gave me the "thumbs up".
Thank you for all your help.
Richard
