Instructions
ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Wow, all this in a can?!!

1 can - 14 coats for a first timer Satin finish job. Came out outstanding. Followed directions and it was as advertised. No issues, no clogging, great product!! Can't believe all this in a can, recommend.

Hard to get smooth

The Colortone clear lacquer took some real practice to get right. You have to use a lot of product to get a deep clear finish but if you get it right it will look beautiful. Some can nozzles caused spitting even though i kept the cans in warm water so I had to find a nozzle that didn't spit so much and use it on each can. When it did spit near the end of the can, fixing the spot was a real pain. Also, the price of the product was a little high compared to what I could find in my local hardware store for a comparable product. Plus if I only needed a single can, shipping cost made the total prohibitive. Overall though I am happy with the final outcome of the projects I used it on.

Great product

The Colortone aerosols work great. I have used the red cherry, the amber, and the red mahogany with excellent results. I have used them as solid colors and as sunburst applications and they look terrific. I experienced no running or drips when used per the directions. The color finish took on the clear coat well and sanded out nicely. I would highly recommend them and plan to use it again on future products.

dummy proof finish

i`m no pro,but the finish i put on my beloved seagull using this product turned out every bit as beautiful as a "NEW"finish from the factory!practically fool proof!

Colors Great; Clear OK

I used Cherry Red and Red Mahogany to match the color and fade on a replacement headstock (made from scrap Mahogany) on an Ibanez acoustic. Colors worked great. Then I clearcoated with the Gloss Clear. The clear lacquer was fine, but the spray valve was not the same as the colors. The colors use a large unique push button that produces a quality spray pattern. On the other hand, the Clear uses a normal "hardware store" type button (small, removable white button). Not surprisingly, it sputtered and spit despite numerous tries and cleaning attempts. It was not dirty or clogged; it was like that from the start. It was no different than you'd expect from a hardware store rattle can, but the others were SO MUCH BETTER. Perhaps StewMac will change over some day. Thanks for the unique products,

Great product

I recently re-acquired a 73 Gibson SG I owned 20+ years ago. The guitar was refinished at one point, mediocre job at best, and had some damage to the body, some hardware problems also. I purchased the finishing kit from Stewmac, followed the directions as written and the outcome was very good! Especially pleased seeing this was my first attempt at refinishing a guitar. Patience is certainly key with the process, cutting corners will result in problems later, wasted lacquer and rework. Make sure you have a well ventilated area when applying the finish, nasty stuff! If you are looking for guitar protection, you may want to choose another alternative rather than Nitro, doesn't take much to ding the finish. Great product and very happy with the service provided by Stewmac!

Colortone aerosol application

For the cost of about 14 cans of Colortone 'spray cans', you can buy a small inexpensive air compressor, a decent siphon feed gun with an air regulator. I don't doubt the quality of these aerosol's material but the final finish coats, gloss or especially satin is very substandard. The spray nozzles are very poor and will not provide a smooth even finish. However these cans are convenient for repairs and quick seal applications without having to 'gear up'..........JCM

Good stuff but...

I've been using this for a while now with great results. Lately however, the spray nozzles and the amount of the contents that I can get out of the can have been very inconsistent. I've gotten up to 10 coats from a can and as little as 5 coats from another on the same project even though I heat the cans to the same temp. When I find a nozzle that sprays well I keep it.

Good

Worked well. I dont have any complaints. Be aware that it is very smelly and the fumes are pretty bad even when its drying. Make sure you have a good place to spray it.

Good stuff

I like the way it darkens up the wood and accents the grain. The only problem I had with it is that when spraying it spits,Even when the can is heated in a pan of hot water.
