Instructions
ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

StewMac is the BEST!

I had a problem with the ColorTone clear lacquer I had ordered. After a quick call to StewMac they said they would send out 3 new cans. NO CHARGE. The new cans worked great and so does the guitar I made. Thank you StewMac.

ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

I am very impressed with this product. I was a little nervous about lacquer from a can but boy was I wrong. I will definitely use it again. This was seven days of work. Day 1: 2 wash coats of lacquer. Day 2 & 3: 4 coats of sander sealer. Day 4–7: 15 coats of lacquer. As a side note what you in the picture is not sanded, polished or buffed! It is straight out of the can! This was done outside during August in Florida on my screened in porch. Then quickly brought into my bathroom with the exhaust fan running and hung overnight to dry. I have made about 10 or so guitars and the finish is always the issue but not anymore. If you can follow directions and have some patience, you can use this product and get great results. My only “issue” was one can did spatter. I was going to toss the can out and count my losses but decided to take the nozzle from another can and that worked fine. Just remember to spray the can a couple times before using it on the wood and always turn the can upside down and spray the nozzle out for a few seconds after and you won’t have a problem. Thanks for the great product, helpful staff and great free information on the website. The fret calculator worked well. Look forward to doing business with you again on the next one.

Good Product

I have used all three of the ColorTone lacquer products on multiple projects. I feel the bang-for-the-buck quotient is very high. I really like the new directional spray nozzle. My only 2 complaints are I wish the clear gloss had more solids and less thinner for a slightly quicker build; And the label needs to be easier to remove before (or after) warming the cans in water.

Aerosol Lacquer

I didn't know that this lacquer would really bring out the shine - man did it ever! This Stick Dulcimer was my first ever instrument build and I wanted it to look good and not spend a fortune. The aerosol lacquer really helped me out - lots of sanding but well worth the effort. I'll be experimenting with this more in the future.

ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

I was NOT wanting to write a negative review about this product, but unfortunately I have to. This product has proven to be inconsistent from lot to lot. I've been building and repairing guitars for nearly 40 years. I do have pro spray equipment as well. But from time to time the paint booth is being used and another solution is needed when it comes to some small touch up work. But in the case of this product it has usually sprayed 'gray' right out of the can requiring me to sand off and re-prep my project. My shop is air conditioned with VERY low humidity as well. I've ALWAYS followed the product's instructions to the letter as well, but most of the time it's the same result. Other products don't do this and I'm positive that the problem lies with colortone here. Over the years, I've never needed blush eraser when spraying since I've always sprayed VERY light coats. Oh and other Colortone aerosol products like the Black have given me similar results. Sorry Colortone, but I just wanted to warn everyone about this. So I'll sand off the gray, Re-prep it, then it's back to my paint booth.

good

This color tone stuff is really nice. Easy to use & does a good job. Had no problem doing a 3 color sunburst. Some of these cans came with an oversize button on the top which made life a lot easier & a lot nicer to use rather than the standard little button your finger gets in the spray. Follow the instructions & think the job thru & should be a piece of cake.

ColorTone aerosol lacquer

This goes on smooth, burns in nicely, and buffs out really shiny. It did stay softer longer than anticipated, I ended up getting some damage from handling the body (normally) and playing the guitar over 3 weeks after spraying. It seemed plenty cured when I buffed it out, but was still very susceptible to nicks and bumps, as I found out. Previously I've used water based products and found them to cure hard more quickly than the nitro, which is surprising.

Clearly Good Stuff

Great coverage, great look. Nice deep gloss. It's a little tricky to use - you have to be careful about temperature and humidity when you spray. Other than that, it's great if you want to do the occasional finish job.

not bad but

this product sprays easy and is great if you have something that is all ready completely sealed and no grain but it doesn't layer up thick at all and take a ton to fill in any grain marks
