Instructions
ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface. In our recommended video Spray Finishing Basics, Dan Erlewine shares helpful tips on aerosol spray finishing.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

rattle can laquer

for years i have been doing things the old school way. mix delute spray gun wait weeks and then finish.
picked up a can if color tone sealer and satin laquer to make finish repairs on a neck and lo and behold within 24 hours it was repaired and back in action. no need to wait weeks and weeks for the spray gun method to cure depending on the size and quality you need this stuff works. will keep it around for sure.

satin nitro

excellent product. the spray pattern and consistency are comparable to professional grade air compressor equipment. it's easy to apply, the flash time is quick, and will yield results exceeding expectations. highly recommended.

Nice clearcoat.

It's possible to get a very nice glassy finish with this product. Seems to work much better with many light coats with wet sanding in between. You must wait 2 weeks to cure before final buffing.

impressive!

This is by far the best clearcoat I have ever used. Wish I'd have known about this stuff when I was painting bikes. Smooth and shiny. Can't gripe about the price on this one, guys, the lacquer's value is commensurate with the price. The sanding sealer is good stuff, too, even though the can spits a bit. I only had to use grain filler in spots on the neck. The sealer filled the rosewood parts very well, and was a great place for the lacquer to go.
Overall, excellent product to cover my signature "spotlightburst."

Sealed it

Used this as the final seal on a shellac over Tweed cabinet. Dried fast, gave it a durable finish. The glossy looks very cool on the Tweed.

Stew-Mac finish

Hi folks,
So I used the Stew-Mac line of finishing products after years of using lots of different brands. I was very pleased with their products and the tips are great for you beginners.
My only words of wisdom for those out there is take your time and never rush a finish.
customer service is great as well.
Thanks Stew-Mac

Good stuff!

Used this on a neck first. Went on well, but runs easily if you're not careful. Sealed the mahogany beautifully.

Great for guys like me w/out compressor

You can actually do pro work w/ cans? Yes. I bought and read Dan's book on guit finishing (a great book). But you can do this w/out the book just w/ the instructions on the can. This was my first project of trying to do it right, w/ guit finishing. It was an SX Resonator guitar. Nice wood, but a crappy finish to start with.

I stripped it, then used the StewMac sanding sealer then gloss lacquer. I did about 20 coats, which used around 3 or 4 cans (can't remember). I'm super happy w/ the result. I still have to do the final sanding/buffing. But now i know: guitar finishing is doable by amateurs like me! So go for it!

Good stuff

The lacquer performs as advertised. It's over priced but helps for small projects.
