Instructions
ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface. In our recommended video Spray Finishing Basics, Dan Erlewine shares helpful tips on aerosol spray finishing.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Our ColorTone Essential Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Nitro's the key....

To a high quality guitar finish that allows your instruments to sing with the inherent tonal qualities of their woods! Don't mute your woods with sound-deadening poly finishes.... Nitrocellulose lacquer in a can from StewMac is the answer.

Great Stuff

I just finished repairing a cracked finish spot where I accidently dropped my all time favorite guitar, a Carvin CS6. I almost passed out! It was on the edge and chipped to the wood. This laquer worked perfectly for my needs. Very good stuff to have around. I'll be getting the colored versions soon. I'm sending a pic and you can hardly see it. Look at the bottom right edge of the instrument.

Easy

My first time finishing a guitar. Even though I have spray equipment, I thought I would give this a try. It worked well. I used clear satin on a Tele body I bought on eBAY. The finished came out great. I finished sanding the body with 2000 grit sandpaper. It's as smooth as glass!

Good Stuff!

I've used this to do a couple Strat necks. Sprays well, flows out nicely. Works well with tints. Dries to a nice hard finish that sands and polishes very well. Holds up very well to playing wear and feels good in the hand, not sticky like some vintage finishes. Good Stuff!

Spray can Paint?

I was sceptical of how it would turn off but it looks great. Be sure to warm the can first. I used the lacquer outside 95 was the temp. Be sure to let completly dry before you bring it inside, temp changes while drying can cause finish to turn white.

Colortone Lacquer Review

I have to say that this product is by in large one of the most useful tools I own in my shop. I run a small repair facility that is not large enough for a full-size spray booth, but Colortone lacquer is perfect for my needs and gives a professional result everytime! I recommend it highly!
