Timbermate has quickly become the favorite grain filler in our own shops. As Dan Erlewine enthusiastically reports, "Timbermate has taken the place of a number of products in my finishing cabinet. It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. It cleans up with water, even days later if I forget to clean a tool. It doesn't shrink, sink, crack or loosen, and the colors are natural and realistic. I can apply a finish over it sooner than with other fillers, too."
8-ounce jars, in four traditional guitar colors plus neutral (a light tan base filler that's also great for custom tinting).
See details below
Timbermate is supplied in paste form for mixing with warm water (10-15 percent). It can be tinted with stains or waterbase pigments to duplicate vintage colors, or for creating your own custom combinations. Simply brush it on to fill the pores in the wood grain, let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish.
Waterbase Timbermate is solvent-free, with no shelf-life problems, so waste is minimized: if it dries hard in your cup, just add more water.
Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, ash and similar "open-grained" woods have porous surfaces. Filling and leveling the grain pores leaves the wood surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the wood grain as well.
