Timbermate Wood Filler

Read 65 Reviews   |   Write a Review

• Waterbase, non-toxic, solvent-free and nonflammable
• Easy to apply, dries faster than other fillers and sands easily
• Fills wood pores without sinking or shrinking
• Compatible with most stains, waterbase pigments, sealers and
  topcoats

Timbermate has quickly become the favorite grain filler in our own shops. As Dan Erlewine enthusiastically reports, "Timbermate has taken the place of a number of products in my finishing cabinet. It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. It cleans up with water, even days later if I forget to clean a tool. It doesn't shrink, sink, crack or loosen, and the colors are natural and realistic. I can apply a finish over it sooner than with other fillers, too."

8-ounce jars, in four traditional guitar colors plus neutral (a light tan base filler that's also great for custom tinting).

Instructions
Timbermate is supplied in paste form for mixing with warm water (10-15 percent). It can be tinted with stains or waterbase pigments to duplicate vintage colors, or for creating your own custom combinations. Simply brush it on to fill the pores in the wood grain, let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish.

Waterbase Timbermate is solvent-free, with no shelf-life problems, so waste is minimized: if it dries hard in your cup, just add more water.

Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, ash and similar "open-grained" woods have porous surfaces. Filling and leveling the grain pores leaves the wood surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the wood grain as well.

timbermate-1st use

I used the mahogany filler on a banjo kit and was quite pleased with the results. By the way your how-to video clip encouraged me to buy this item. Good move!

Easy to use

Mixes, applies and sands easy. I suggest using several applications to make sure the grain is fully filled unless you plan on leaving a small layer on the wood which changes the coloration and the grain color show through.

Pigmented varieties hard to work with

The neutral/tint base version works pretty well. It mixes well in warm water just like the video shows, and it brushes on/wipes off to a dry powder pretty easily. The pigmented versions are a completely different animal. Something about the heavy pigment content changes the behavior of the material - doesn't mix well in water, doesn't brush on well and penetrate into pores, dries WAY too fast into a pebbly, hard mess. I've had pretty good results with the neutral version but I would not recommend the pigmented varieties.

Timber Mate-- First trial

I attempted to do some touch-up filling with Timber Mate filler and it just didn't take. Will give it another try on bare wood. Maybe my opinion will change

Does what it says on the tin

Just the best filler I've ever used. I bought the neutral and tinted it with some raw sienna earth pigment to grain fill some Zebrano. The result is astonishing. You don't have to worry too much about leaving too much proud either as sanding back from an overfill is a breeze. Great product - will be ordering some more of this.
