ColorTone® Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable opaque black gloss finish that can be clearcoated with ColorTone Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss. Convenient 13-ounce spray can.

ColorTone® Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler, and over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer. It's ideal for touch-up work, or for an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal the wood before the black coats are applied. Spray only enough black to hide the wood; most of the final finish thickness should be sprayed with clear gloss topcoats.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Goes on smooth

I haven't had a problem with the nozzles spitting like with some other brands. Nice stuff!

Perfect Product

I used this on the head stock of my Les Paul build and also on a neck repair on a Epiphone Les Paul. High quality paint, flows well after being warmed up.

Finish looks great!

Though the can tends to splatter, sanding gives a nice, smooth finish. It looks great

Great product

As others have mentioned, it is imperative that you warm up your lacquer before using, and remember to clear the head after each coat. This went on with no problems, and the vertical/horizontal nozzle is great for different spraying patterns. I highly recommend this product.

Great products!!

I recently bought several finishing items for a restoration of my 1977 Les Paul Pro. I filled and re-routed the body so I could reinstall the orignal P-90 pups (Had some EMG 81 and 85 pups). I then sanded and applied several coats of black lacquer then buffed with one of your foam poliching pads on a drill motor.

I am very pleased with the outcome and can't wait to start a new project. My orders came promtly and as ordered, never any problems there. I also was very pleased with the quality of everything I ordered and would suggest your products to anyone wanting to give a try doing some work on an instrument. Thanks everyone at Stewmac!!

Great Headstock Black

For the Gibson headstock look I was after (black mirror finish), I got it easily with this product. I will never use anything else for black on a guitar.

Worked great!

Used this on a repair on an black Epiphone acoustic guitar. I used the sanding sealer and the clear coat with it after repairing a hole in the guitar body. Several people told me that the hole couldn't be economically repaired. You can't tell the hole was ever there and the guitar plays and sounds as good as ever.

I just followed the directions for the finish and it came out great. Much easier than using an air brush. Just remember to clear the nozzle between coats and spitting doesn't seem to be a problem. I have plenty left over for another project I'm working on.
