Instructions
ColorTone® Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of paste wood fillers or ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler; over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. It's ideal for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface. Tinted coats should not be sanded. In our recommended video Spray Finishing Basics, Dan Erlewine demonstrates helpful tips on using aerosols.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Colortone Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

Takes a bit of practice to know what it will do. Have bought many cans. Always consistent color and quality. Applies best when can is warmed to at least room temperature. Can be used to spray light to really dark stain. Looks great on my necks! Wish they could lower the price but I guess that is an incentive to learn your application technique quickly! Will buy again. Very satisfied. Thank you.

Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquers

These are great paints, and getting the tri-color starburst design was really not that hard at all. If you are thinking about doing a starburst, this is the product for you.

Follow the instructions in the sidebar on the StewMac page, give the lacquers a nice warm bath, and the application will be a pleasant experience. Suggest you sand the guitar very well beforehand with at least 600 grit, and then have patience, patience, patience. I can't wait to buff this guitar out! Spray it outside or your wife will never let you live it down.

Tobacco Brown Sputter

First thing I ordered from Stew Mac that I wish I hadn't bought. Pretty dark, builds really quickly but nice color. Hard to keep transparent especially with all the sputtering. Sputtering was unmanageable - even after warming can.
No problem with the clear coats.

Restoration

I purchased several colors of Colortone lacquer to restore the finish on an old guitar. It worked well. A little testing on scrap wood and I was ready to spray the guitar which turned out well.

Colortone Amber

The quality of the finish is wonderful but the tint of amber is a crap shoot from can to can. It ranges from slightly banana to Listerine. It needs to be a consistent caramel color. I'm still thankful it is available at the price.

GETTING GREAT RESULTS...

MY SECOND SUNBURST IS COMPLETED. I PICKED UP A BEAT UP PINK (METALIC SUNSET)1987 GIBSON LES PAUL CUSTOM ON EBAY FOR $1100.00 KNOWING THAT THESE RATTLE CANS WOULD TAKE ME WHERE I NEEDED TO GO. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY RESULTS. THE COLORS ARE GREAT BUT YOU NEED TO PRACTICE BEFORE YOU GO HOT. I READ ALL THE INTERNET INFO AND WATCHED THE PROS DO SPRAYS ON YOUTUBE RIGHT BEFORE I SPRAYED MINE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THESE LACQUERS FOR BEGINNERS TO PRO. EASY TO USE AND GREAT RESULTS.

Nitro in a rattle can

I'm just getting started in building one-off guitars and don't have the space or the money for high end spraying gear. The "rattle can" nitrocellulose lacquers are a great deal for me.

I've used the ColorTone tinted and the clear lacquers with amazing results. My next project is fixing a botched re-finish job that the previous owner did on a '67 Gibson Melody Maker using red mahogany and clear coat. I can't wait to see the results.
