Spray Finishing Basics: 115 minutes VHS (NTSC) Video highlights from our book Guitar Finishing Step-By-Step, with StewMac's Don MacRostie and Dan Erlewine. Don demonstrates the professional compressed-air spray equipment in his shop, and finishes a bound alder guitar body in high gloss custom-color lacquers.
Dan uses handheld aerosol lacquers to produce a translucent white "blonde" finish on an ash guitar body. Using hand-rubbed compounds and a light-duty electric hand buffer, he shows you how to get an outstanding high gloss finish. Topics covered in this video include spraying techniques, mixing colored lacquers, the use of vinyl sealer and shellac; paste-filling wood grain, sanding and hand-rubbing techniques; machine buffing, and custom guitar headstock finishing. Sunburst Finishing: 50 minutes VHS (NTSC) More video highlights from our Guitar Finishing Step-By-Step book, with Don MacRostie and Dan Erlewine. Don applies a traditional sunburst finish to the face of a repaired curly maple Guild archtop guitar. This type of finish was used by manufacturers of high-end guitars in the 1950s, including Gibson.
Using special color-matching and color-blending boards he has developed, Don matches the colors of the original Guild finish. He teaches you how to make your own color boards, and how to mix custom lacquer shaders and toners. Topics also include how to spray sealers and transparent toner coats; clear lacquer topcoating; wet-sanding, rub-out and pedestal buffing techniques.
Will these videos play on your equipment? These videotapes are in NTSC format (not PAL), and may not work with VCRs sold outside of the USA. International customers, please be sure your equipment is compatible with NTSC tapes.

I just finished my guitar with the products that I purchased from you. I also bought the Guitar Finishing Step-By-Step book and videos. I just wanted to say that with the combined book and videos my finishing project (beginner) turned out better than I expected. It gave me much insight to future projects. |

I think Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie are the Ben Franklin and Orville Wright of guitar repair and construction!!! This is just a very, very well deserved thank you! I honestly don’t know if I’d be building guitars without you guys (and Bob Benedetto who I found through you!). It’s great to see people making the most of their profession, and boy do you! |
