JackPot Potentiometer

This combo pot and rotary switch bypasses your instrument’s volume and tone controls. Play full throttle, with the pickup wired directly to the output jack, for a broader signal and enhanced highs.

"Take the muffler off your electric guitar!"

When wired into your guitar (rewiring of tone controls may be required), this control removes the load of the pots. Think of it as a knob that goes from 0-10, plus a switch to 11—there's an actual click!

The JackPot's rotary switch clicks on when the knob reaches full rotation. The open switch lifts the ground to the pot, eliminating the load on the pickups and letting the full signal reach the output jack. When the knob is rotated counterclockwise, the ground to the pot is reconnected, so the pot returns to standard operation.

"On my Tele I get a brighter, more aggressive sound that is more sensitive to my picking style and attack!"
—Casey Davis, guitarist and StewMac customer service rep

Why do you want it?
  • With the JackPot you can play full on, with the pickups wired directly to the output jack. You'll still have a trusty volume knob to back off instantly to a lower level when needed.
  • The JackPot produces a stronger signal level, greater warmth, more intensity.
  • On typical instrument wiring, when the volume knob is maxed out, there is still a portion of the signal that bleeds to ground. The output level never reaches the full level the pickup would achieve if it were wired directly to the output jack.

Which pot value should you choose?
500K pots are standard controls for humbuckers, and 250Ks are usually used for single-coil pickups. A 250K gives a slightly warmer tone than a 500K, and bleeds off some of the high frequencies to ground. A 1-meg pot bleeds off even less than a 500K.

1-meg pots are also ideal for piezo pickups, as the ultra high impedance piezo element is more adversely effected by conventional, lower-value pots than magnetic pickups.

Replacement Mounting Nuts and Lock Washers are also available.

Sneaky little feller

and it is too! wind it up to about 9 and it works like an ordinary control. Click it to 10 and there is a kick in the rear - a boost just right for soloing. 2 cons though - it also cuts out the tone control ground, so no Clapton Tone solos - and it doesn't rotate fully - set the knob pointer at 10, turn the control counterclockwise and when the pot comes to a stop, the knob skirt reads 3, not 0. and its smaller than a CTS - (that's 3 cons...well I didn't expect a Spanish Inquisition)

Jackpot A Winner

I recently had a 4 way selector switch, and then a Jackpot Volume pot on my Telecaster. Wow! I love it. The volume pot bypasses everything and goes straight to the jack and gives the guitar more oomph. Well done Ned Steinberger! Be aware it is a mini pot and very small. With these two mods done, I am completely satisfied with the whole thing now.

Another great idea from Steinberger

I chose the 250k pot for a humbucker equipped guitar to try a warm/bright tone switch effect. The pot does give a slight treble boost when the bypass switches over and a warmer tone when switched back. My only complaint is that this is a MINI pot, not a traditional full size pot. The shaft is a much smaller diameter than a standard pot and must be held in place until snug to be properly centered. The shaft is also to short for use in Les Paul and some other rear route guitars. The legs of the pot are also very small and delicate, this pot needs to be re-engineered to standard full size pot specs. Overall it is a great Idea from Ned, one of those ideas you kick yourself for not thinking of 20 years ago. It just needs to be designed and manufactured a little better for real world applications. I was very glad StewMac had the wiring diagram online because no instructions were included with the pot.

Interesting Device

I recently install one for a friend in a 1992 Fender Prodigy. He said that there is a noticeable boost in volume and brighter tone when engaged. He liked the feature. The only issue that I had was connecting all the ground wires. The terminals would only accept a max of 3 stranded wires and design does not allow you to solder to the metal case of the pot. You then have to connect some or all of the grounds to a single wire and then connect it to the pot. The original wiring used the volume pots case as the common tie point.
