PAF humbucker tone meets '50s Filtertron twang!

TV Jones Power'Tron Pickups

Read 2 Reviews   |   Write a Review

A versatile blend of PAF humbucker and Filtertron rockabilly tone. TV Jones started with their famous Classic Gretsch-repro pickup, added extra-tall bobbins to the bridge model for more standard-gauge coil windings, and overwound the neck model. The result: fatter, darker and hotter sound. Used by Billy Gibbons!

Good news! They're supplied with custom-fitted Gibson® mounting rings, so you can easily swap out your stock humbuckers.

Power'Tron pickups are humbuckers that feature two rows of adjustable polepieces, in bridge and neck position spacings. Original 1/4"-thick Gretsch Alnico Filtertron magnets were carefully analyzed and reproduced. Each pickup is wax potted to help eliminate microphonic feedback, and has a 2-conductor shielded wire. Mounting screws and springs, mounting ring, and installation instructions are included. Neck model 5.0K ohms, bridge model 7.8K ohms. David Lee of the Legendary Shack Shakers has a set of Power'Trons in his Gretsch White Falcon.

The Power'Tron Plus is used by Billy Gibbons. It's a special bridge position variation—the standard gauge coil wire is overwound on the extra-tall bobbins. The result: an even fatter, darker and hotter sound than the standard Power'Tron. 8.4K ohms.

All pickups:
Mounting screws and springs, mounting ring and installation instructions are included.
Pickup dimensions: 1-3/8" x 2-13/16" (34.93mm x 71.44mm)
Neck models: 5/8" height (17.15mm), 1-29/32" polepiece spread (48.42mm)
Bridge models: 3/4" height (19.05mm), 2-1/32" polepiece spread (51.59mm)

Mounting ring dimensions:
Neck ring tapers from 1/4" to 5/32" height (6.35mm to 3.97mm)
Bridge ring tapers from 3/8" to 9/32" height (9.52mm to 7.14mm)
Both rings are 3-1/2" x 1-3/4" (88.90mm x 44.45mm) with flat (non-arched) bottom

Handy routing template for the pickguard cutout is available.

Please note: these pickups do not have the original Gretsch-style mounting design.

Custom Epiphone Wilshire

Nice little Epiphone Wilshire, plays like a dream but unremarkable sound, a bit lifeless. The Powertron Pickups went straight in with no trouble but some care needed aligning them as the mounting rings are very slightly smaller than the Epiphone items. Added a nice Bigsby for a bit of vintage wobble and the guitar is transformed!
The bridge pickup is more powerful than I was expecting, drives my Fender Princeton sweetly with lots of nice harmonics when you dig in! Theres a hint of warm Strat about the neck pickup, which is nice as you can switch from a dirty lead to a nice funky rhythm sound. I'm well pleased with the Powertrons, if they are good enough for Billy G they are good enough for me, try 'em!

TV Jones PowerTron

I put a bridge position TV Jones PowerTron in my Warmoth tele to compliment the coil tapped 57 Classic in the neck position. The TV Jones is a relatively dark sounding pickup but that is what I was looking for. It also is not high gain so if you're looking for a real screamer pickup, this isn't it.

It has very nice, percussive and tight bottom end to it but still has plenty of definition on the top end. I am very pleased with it and I think I, finally, found the pickup for this tele. It is the one that is used in Fender's La Cabronita series tele guitars and it's a nice match up.
