Fishman Resonator Guitar Pickup

Read 4 Reviews   |   Write a Review

Endorsed by Jerry Douglas!
The Fishman resonator guitar pickup is designed to reproduce the instrument's unique and complex sound with amazing realism. The result of a 3-year collaborative effort by Fishman and resonator guitarmaker Paul Beard, this unique pickup fastens to the center of the cone, in both single-cone "spider" and "biscuit" style bridges, and includes a 1/4" output jack for mounting on the end or side of the guitar.

The active model features a low-noise impedance-matching preamp built into the jack, voiced to match the unique sound characteristics of the resonator guitar, and ready for any amp or mixer (a Velcro® mount battery bag is incluced, a 9-volt battery required). A passive model is also available, for use with other preamps.

Great improvement

I have a Dobro Hound Dog (Epiphone) that came with a fishman passive pickup. Although it is a fine pickup, I constantly fought a harsh, tinny sound with the pre-amps I used. The active pickup solved all that!
One word of caution: The active preamp is longer than the passive one and extends farther into the sound chamber. You have to make sure it is far enough toward the butt of the guitar so it will clear the downward angle of the cone. I created a small dimple in the cone before I made the necessary adjustment. No biggie in that the dimple smoothed out by carefully using the back of my thumbnail. Just be aware of your dimensions.

Resonator Guitar Pickup

As far as electronics and 'plugged in' performance it is very good. But, replicating 'true' resonator sound, this product falls well short. If you are happy with your instrument sounding like a lap steel, go for it!
I suggest putting a thin wood x-ply maple, 1" dia cleet, applied to the underside of the cone to attach pickup. This will help in 'true' cone transfer of tone. Not to be negative, this is a great product but it's attached at the hub with little regard to resonator tone.....JCM

Overall pretty good

Very easy to fit, my far-eastern biscuit bridge had to acquire a 2.5mm hole in the biscuit as there was no existing central hole, just two screws either side. I agree that you want the passive model for a metal-bodied guitar, changing the battery if it's inside the body could take forever. I had to modify my pre-amp; output from the pickup had excessive treble.

Fishman Resonator Pickup (Passive vs Active)

This pickup was easy to install and sounds great. The only thing I don't like is that it requires a 9 volt battery to be fitted inside the guitar. Its not easy to get into the guitar to replace the battery (lots of screws to remove). I should have bought the Passive model and used an external pre-amp. We learn by our mistakes!!!!
