Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

Read 101 Reviews   |   Write a Review

We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born. Our Parsons Street™ humbucking pickups are closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

Instructions
Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Pretty Authentic

These pickups have an amazing tone. I got my bridge a little hotter than the average, just like Jimmy Page's configuration. I play a lot of Zeppelin and you need great PAF pickups to acquire the tone. These do the job. Stew Mac went to great lengths to replicate a PAF, maple spacers, long magnet, unpotted, etc.

Sweet!

I put a alnico 5 neck with an overwound bridge in my new PRS SE Santana. I love this combo, better than the regular in the neck and overwound bridge combo I had in another. Highly recommended.

1937 Kay Acoustic Guitar

Mounted a P-90 in this old Kay. Not quite finished but the sound is dynamic.

Nice... even for the price!

I've been watching these since the price was lower. I sucks that it is higher now but still a very good product.

Really accurate PAF tone!

Boutique Quality / Half The Price

I purchased a cosmetically challenged late 90's Korean (Samick) Epi LP to restore. First off, I was impressed with the build quality of the guitar so I figured it was worth an upgrade. I looked at all the available PU's and decided to take a flyer on these, Alnico 5 neck - 2 bridge,I'm blown away! I put the money I saved into new pots, caps and wiring and oh yeah the savings partially financed a new set of locking tuners as well.

The LP holds it's own with my buddy's vintage Gibsons and I doubt I'll ever sell it. Don't hesitate to buy these as an upgrade to an newer Epiphone, you won't be disappointed.

Made my guitar priceless to me!

I have a 1953 Kay arch top acoustic that was a wreck. I bought it in a thrift store for $5 thinking if I couldn't fix it up it would look really cool hanging on my wall. Let me emphasize that this guitar wasn't worth anything with how messed up it was. For example the neck was completely loose and held on with a single bolt.
After going to 6 different guitar shops and being told not to cut a hole in my guitar or being told to "send it to a pro" I finally found one Luthier who said "Of course you can do that! Just work slow and careful and do your research." So after searching for a while for something mean sounding on a budget I decided on the Parsons Street Humbucker, and I could not be happier!
Like I said in the description my guitar is now PRICELESS to me because it sounds amazing and I did the work on it. So if you are looking for some pickups GET THE PARSONS STREET HUMBUCKERS!!!! You will not be disappointed.

Alnico2 Bridge and Neck Parsons Street

I agree with other reviewers, Articulate is the best word to describe them. I got instant ZZTop Pearly Gates sounds with these installed. And this was in a generic kit guitar advertised in guitar magazines. I will admit that I added Sperzel tuners, Cts pots and a Stewmac 3-way switch, plus 13-50 strings.
You get harmonic pops and squeals from these un-potted pickups, when applied to a driven valve amp. I installed my pickups and tested them on my newly acquired Vox Little Night Train Head/Cab. The test period turned into several hours just seeing what these pickups could do. I don't think they are 'better' than other top end pickups, but I do like the voicing of these.
They produce a sweet, articulate crunchy sound...think tube screamer, Proco Rat etc, but without the pedal. Plus you get individual note separation...almost a 3D sound. Can't beat that. The price and value for money.......NOTHING comes near these at the price!

Great P'UPs

These are absolutely worth every penny they cost. I cannot get over the increase in sustain and sound quality they produce over the original Epiphone Humbuckers on my DOT. It turned my DOT from a good guitar, to a great guitar, especially with Graph-Tech nut and TOM and tail-piece. I would hold this DOT up to any Gibson ES-335 any day of the week!

Sound like Gibsons to me

You can buy these same pickups all over the place for TWICE the money. The only issue is that the neck pickup lead wire was placed on the pickup such that it would have to travel under the pickup. I elected to simply put both sets of screws (2 pickups) pointing in the same direction. The screws are cosmetic anyway (so says Seth Lover, the guy who invented them.) That, to me, was better than introducing a source of hum.
