I rebuilt a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I wanted more tone options so I added a third Humbucker. I wanted more pickup configurations and after doing some research I came across the Free-Way Pickup Switch. Here is the configuration.

1. Neck
2. Neck and Bridge
3. Bridge
4. Neck and Middle
5. Middle (Plus an Optional Push, Pull tone Pot for all 3 Humbuckers.)
6. Bridge and Middle

Not to mention, I added push pull pots on the three volume pots for single coil activation. I have a 23 different tone combinations and the Les Paul looks totally stock! This guitar is a tone Jedi! I am really thankful to Alasdair Bryce from Free-Way for corresponding with me for this very intricate wiring schematic. Thanks to Stew Mac for carrying this switch. Get your solder skills on, and turn any guitar into a tone factory!

Have the cake and eat it too

First up, big thanks to Alasdair for making so many wiring diagrams for me and helping me out in general!! Ok, I bought a '77 [Norlin] Gibson LPC 3 pup that sounded mean. But I figured, go the whole hog and get more tones out of this BB with the Free-Way Pickup Switch! My final setup looks like this, including a push-pull for the middle pup to be on.

1 - neck pup
2 - neck & bridge pup
3 - bridge pup

4 - middle & neck pup
5 - middle & bridge pup
6 - middle pup

I decided to use the left side as if it were a 2 pup setup, then on the right, the middle pup and its combinations. I put the middle pup by itself on the 6th spot as it is ergonomically the easiest to gear and will use the oop sound quite frequently. For those doing something similar, I really recommend getting a feel for shifting on a 6 way. Get an idea of how YOU will use your guitar and then contact Alasdair. At the moment, it's a little tricky to switch to the 5th notch [middle & bridge], but that is by no means the switch's fault. I'm very happy I got it. The Free-Way Switch I think is quite durable and should be able to withstand normal gigging. The switch cavity for my LPC needed some Dremeling, but I had my luthier take care of that. Anyways, really cool product and very attentive support.

Free-Way Pickup Switch

This was a good solution for wiring up my 3 pickup Gibson SG Custom Les Paul. The wiring diagrams were very useful, and the new improved Free-Way Switch eliminates the need to solder in jumper wires before installation... what a huge headache that would have been!

Excellent replacement for rotary switch

Ordered this switch and received it like in three days - testimony to Stew Mac's excellent service. Alisdair Bryce from Freeway Switch's customer service was spot-on and immediately sent me the wiring diagrams that I didn't see listed on the FW web site. I needed a HH 1V1T configuration for my PRS CE 22. Installed it the next day and like the pickup options with single coil on one side of the switch and humbuckers on the other. I am "Happy, Happy, Happy"!

Fantastic for modding

I bought this for my Epiphone Black Beauty 3 which is my "project" guitar. I have upgraded the neck and bridge HBs to hotter PUs and chose a P90 for the middle PU. I actually wrote to Free-way in England and Alasdair wrote me back and we came up with a customized design just for my purposes. With the Free-way, I am able to achieve the following:

1: Neck
2: Neck + Bridge in parallel
3: Bridge
4: Neck single coil + P90
5: P90
6: Bridge single coil + P90

Tone pot switch pulled out gives:

1: Neck Hum in series with P90
2: Neck + Bridge Hums in series with P90
3: Bridge in series with P90
4: Neck single coil in series with P90
5: P90
6: Bridge single coil in series with P90

I *highly* recommend this switch if you are looking to maximize your wiring options. Free-way is a great company to work with and it's really a great product.

Superb support from manufacturer.

I bought this to fit to a Gibson Historic BBR7 3 pickup Les Paul. I got in touch with Alasdair Bryce (product designer) via the FreeWaySwitch website for support with "50s wiring" and the option to use "middle pup only". At first even he thought it was not possible, but still persevered and returned with a (more complex) diagram. Truly great support. Both first fit (using standard schematic) and re-wire were a doddle. Switch not quite as sturdy feeling as traditional toggle, but positive nonetheless - I expect it to last well. NO APPARENT LOSS OF TONE (using vintage style wire and keeping lengths as short as possible) either. With the excellent support this is an elegant, no compromise solution for LPC 3p/u's...

High quality switch with plenty of options

I bought this switch for a new project guitar with 2 humbuckers and am incredibly happy with the range of available tones. I used essentially scheme 7 from the PDF wiring instructions, although slightly modified to have a master volume and tone. The guys at FreeWay were very helpoful and helped me with the wiring - even going so far as to send me a custom diagram they drew up to my requirements.

I highly recommend this switch to anyone looking to add more tonal variation in the space of a traditional 3-way toggle switch.

Amazing product, amazing support - ideal for 3-pickup guitars

Since the Free-Way Pickup Switch was recently re-designed with a smaller form-factor, I've installed several in my Gibson, Epiphone and Hofner guitars with two- and three-humbucking pickup configurations. Each installation went very smoothly and the switch is a dream to use. One of the best things in addition to the switch itself is the amazing product support I've received from the manufacturer. You will find many different wiring diagrams on the company website, but I wrote to them because I had some ideas about different wiring schemes. Each time I've written with an idea, Alasdair Bryce has taken the time to produce an original wiring diagram for me within a matter of a day or two. I'm completely satisfied. BTW, if you have a three-humbucking pickup guitar and want to exploit its tonal possibilities to the fullest, this Free-Way Pickup Switch works great when you have your humbuckers wired first to Seymour Duncan's "Triple-Shot" switching system, then routed to the Free-Way switch. In this way, you end up with over 100 different humbucking and single-coil pickup combinations. Also, if you're putting these switches on a thinline guitar that you do not want to drill extra holes into for various volume and tone controls, I'd recommend installing Schatten thumbwheel pots (available from Stewmac) inside the guitar's F-holes. Very easy to use, without making your guitar's face too complicated.

Great switch!

I used this switch in a 3 pickup guitar (Stew Mac p90 kits) that I built. I didn't want to have to use push pull or blend pots to access all of the pickup combinations. The Free Way allows me to have any six of the seven possible combinations of three pickups. I left out all three pickups as that would probably sound like a muddy mess anyway, so I'm happy. The switch itself looks kinda like a cheap imported switch but the switching action feels solid and all of the positions are easy and smooth to switch between. Not quite as solid a feel as a Switchcraft switch, but good enough for the versatility it allows. The gold plated pads take solder quick and easy. The wiring diagrams seemed pretty complicated but it turned out to be a rather simple job. I mounted the switch to a pick guard so routing an existing cavity was not a concern of mine. My only real complaint is that the switch only came with one nut. I would suggest that a second nut be included in the future to allow for height adjustment when mounted on a pick guard. Fortunately I happened to have the right size Metric nut in my parts bin, but I could see that being a difficult part to find in the US.

Great Switch -- REVOLUTIONARY!!!

I'm using the Free-Way to convert 1 Center PU Gibson ES225s in to 3 PUP / 1Vol 1Tone Split Coil using a custom Free-Way Schematic. The switch is PHENOMENAL!!! It helps turn a plain-Jane guitar that most consider unusable into a real tone monster!!! This switch ROCKS!!!
