Hipshot Tremsetter

I bought this product as I read it was good for keeping a floating trem stable while bending strings and doing double stops and the like, thus preventing other strings dipping in pitch in the process. I installed the Tremsetter myself and it wasn't a difficult job at all. The instructions included with the kit are good but there's an excellent online video by Hipshot that shows you how to do the install which is even easier to follow. After installing the Tremsetter I was immediately impressed with how well it works. I can now bend strings all I like and so far it's kept all the other strings at the correct pitch. So far so good. However, there are one or two drawbacks depending on how you perceive things: Firstly it does add a measure of extra resistance to whammy bar use, especially on down-pitch dives. The feel of the trem changes quite dramatically. Up-shift pitch changes aren't affected quite so much, though. I'm also dubious about the claim that it will keep the rest of your strings in tune should one break. That is perhaps true if you're using extremely light gauge strings but even on a 9 or 10 set, if the top 'E' string were to break I doubt very much whether it would keep the other strings to pitch. I sort of tested this when changing strings and with only the top 'E' removed the bridge does shift position. The spring inside the unit which affects the up-pitch is not as strong as the spring which controls down-pitch and so I do not believe it would have the grunt the keep the bridge from moving should a string break mid song, sorry. If your trem is very sensitive, as was the trem on my PRS then the unit does make things a bit more controllable and subtle vibratos have a bit more finesse about them. The biggest improvement for me, however, is the change in the entire feel of the guitar. Instead of fighting the trem during string bending, the bridge is now stable and the guitar has taken on a much better response both physically and to my ears, sonically. It feels much more fluid to play and during string bends you can feel the guitar responding to your input rather than feel the bridge fighting back, if that makes any sense. Overall a very good product with a few drawbacks and dubious claims but with benefits that far surpass the negative aspects.

I installed it in less them 30 minutes. I didn't have a long drill bit so i used an electricians trick with a coaat hangar. perfect size for the rod to pass thru. works like a champ. THe tremelo is stiffer but I don't use it that much anyway.

I read a lot of reviews before I skeptically purchased. I installed it myself, If you can read & follow directions, you should have no problems with awesome results. I installed it on a early model GTX with a KMD bridge. It plays so much better, and stays in tune. A++

It's great, it functions as it should, but it makes the whammy bar a little tough. I ended up throwing it away. I gotta be clear with this, It's a great product, it really works but if you like an easy bar in your locking tremolo. Be away from it.

This is the best tool you can use to stabilize your tremolo. Installation was fairly easy but a bit scary since I had to do a bit of routing because it didn't clear the minimum 3-3/8" from the sustain block. Overall a great product from stewmac with speedy shipping. Will definitely buy from these guys again.

I have a friend who owns two Strats. He brought me one a few months ago, it wouldn't fret right, had some chirps and buzzes between the 8th and 12th frets.....it had a ball bearing roller nut, (something I had never worked on before), and it measured up ok....BUT -the tremolo bridge was touching at the back, (?) so I jacked that up to 1/8th inch...re-set the whole thing up, and it played monstrously good-didn't need anything else. So, he is so happy, he just brought me Strat number 2. Same kind of nut, same thing wrong with the bridge....NOTE* I think the previous setup dude needs to learn how to set up a tremolo bridge! Anyway, when I took the back off, uhhhh, what is that thing?

I have seen a tremsetter in this catalog, but never worked on a guitar that had one, and always thought about getting one for my Strat. I went to google, found all the instructions for installing these, a couple forums with ideas, and a youtube by the guy that makes these things. I went to the bench, setup the guitar with 2 springs, got it close, then put this tremsetter back in and adjusted it the way that the guy on the youtube said to. First off, I cannot understand how any guitar tech that can read, could screw up one of these bridges -EVER- and for the life of me, I can't see how anybody could ever knock the usefullness of the tremsetter. I shall be ordering one for my "Ruby" Strat.....RP at guitrailer guitars....ps, never too late to teach an old dog a new trick!

As a professional guitar technician I have installed dozens of these. They do exactly what they are supposed to, and are a lifesaver for any guitarist who wants a more stable, in tune tremolo system. The Installation MUST be done precisely and by a pro, as it is a very delicate procedure. I have not had one complaint from any of my clients, and sell more and more of these every year. All in all great product that works as advertised.
